Dordt College Football vs. Doane

(Crete, Nebraska) The Dordt College Defender football team lost a 56-13 decision in GPAC action at Doane on Saturday, November 2. Four second quarter touchdowns vaulted the Tigers from a 7-7 tie with the Defenders to a 35-7 halftime lead and the eventual eight touchdown day while Dordt had a touchdown in the first and fourth quarters. Three Dordt turnovers led directly to Doane touchdowns.
Both teams had extended drives to start the game with Doane going 69 yards on 11 plays, finishing the scoring drive with a one yard Alex Dose run.
Dordt responded with a grinding 12 play, 75 yard drive, and punched it in with a Lenard Manual one yard plunge for the 7-7 tie.
A third long drive culminated with Doane scoring on the first play of the second quarter on a Clayton Moore eight yard run to put the finishing touches on a 12 play, 81 yard drive. The kick made it 14-7 with 14:56 left in the first half.
Doane’s defense scored the next points as JerSean Walder ran 29 yards after an interception for a score and the Tigers had a 21-7 advantage with 14:22 remaining.
Dordt was forced to punt on its next possession and Doane marched 59 yards for its third touchdown of the quarter and the fourth score came on a drive that was set up by a Dordt fumble at the Doane 39 yard line. Doane went the needed 59 yards and scored with less than a minute left in the half for a 35-7 halftime advantage.
Doane’s three scores came on a 32 yard drive and two fumble returns of 21 yards each at the 8:03 mark and the 2:33 mark of the period.
Dordt got the final score when Trai Pickney scored on an eight yard run with 6:41 left in the game. The point after was blocked and the final stood at 56-13.
Dordt ran for 132 yards and allowed 147 while passing for 61 and Doane had 191 in the air. Erin Francis ran for 58 yards on 10 carries and had a long of 15 yards. Manuel had 14 carries for 49 yards. Sam Verhulst had four catches for 47 yards and Zach Barker was 6-13 passing for 61 yards and had three passes picked off.
Doane had 49 yards on the ground by Nate Meier and Phil Thramer ran for 47 yards on nine carries. Thramer also completed 10-16 passes for 158 yards and Nate Meier had two catches for 54 yards.
Seth Vande Voort led the Dordt defense with seven solo and six assisted tackles and had a sack. Vanoy Harris continued his strong play with a seven solo and four assisted stop afternoon and Jake Atkinson had eight solo tackles. JT Teixera had six solo and for assisted stops.
Doane’s Jeremy Wallace had four solo and six assisted tackles and Garret Borcher had five solo and two assisted stops with an interception.
Dordt is 2-7 overall and 0-7 in the GPAC while Doane is 5-3 overall and 5-2 in the GPAC. Dordt travels to Hastings next Saturday for GPAC play in its final road game of the 2013 season.
