Dordt College Football vs. Northwestern

October 26, 2013

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender football team lost a 48-10 Great Plains Athletic Conference game to Northwestern on Saturday afternoon in Sioux Center. The visitors scored 34 unanswered points after Dordt had cut the lead to 14-10 in the second quarter.

Northwestern struck quickly in the first quarter with Paul Hutson racing 51 yards on Northwestern’s first possession. Northwestern scored again on a Davis Bloemendaal six yard to cap a 43 yard drive at the 10:22 mark of the first quarter and it looked like the Raiders were going to run away with it.

Dordt regrouped and put together a drive that stalled inside the Northwestern 30. A Barry Dykstra field goal attempt from 40 yards had the distance but was wide right into the wind. Dordt got on the board with 14:57 left in the first half when Lenard Manuel pushed in from two yards out to cap a nine play, 75 yard drive.

Dordt successfully moved the ball into Northwestern territory on its next possession and lined up for a field goal attempt but tried a shovel pass on the play and it came up short and Dordt turned it over on downs.

After the defense held and Dordt got the ball back, the Defenders marched in to Northwestern territory and this time settled for a 20 yard field goal that made it 14-10 when Dordt faced fourth and goal at the three.

Northwestern swung the momentum into its favor with an 11 play, 87 yard drive that culminated with a Bloemendaal to Bryce Byker 17 yard touchdown pass with 3:33 left in the half. Northwestern got one more score when the defense forced Dordt to punt from deep in their own territory and Bloemendaal found Jacey Hoegh for a 19 yard pass completion with less than a minute remaining in the half.

Northwestern’s Ben Green scored on pass plays of 15 and 41 yards in the third quarter and Bloemendaal found Byker for a 71 yard pass and run with 4:58 left in the game to finish the scoring at 48-10.
