Dordt College Football vs. Nebraska Wesleyan

(Lincoln, Nebraska) Three second half scores turned a 7-0 halftime score into a 28-0 win for Nebraska Wesleyan over Dordt College in GPAC football play in Lincoln, Nebraska on Saturday, October 19.
The Defenders hung with the Prairie Wolves in the first half, allowing just an 80 yard, 10 play drive by the Prairie Wolves that resulted in a two yard touchdown pass from Tyler Francis to Nolan Clausen with 3:39 left in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead. The score came on a fourth down and goal play where Wesleyan faked a handoff up the middle, leaving Clausen free in the end zone.
Dordt worked into Wesleyan territory once in the first half, but managed to battle for field goal position with Heath Bonestroo averaging nearly 46 yards per punt in the first half.
Wesleyan went on a 15 play, 76 yard drive to start the second half but had its field goal attempt sail wide left, leaving the score at 7-0. After Dordt failed to move the football and punted Wesleyan took over at its 43 and after a pass interference call moved them to the Dordt 42, the Prairie Wolves struck for a 39 yard score on second and seven as Connor Zumpfe got behind the Dordt defense for the score.
Wesleyan scored its next two touchdowns in the fourth after Dordt turnovers. The first came when Eric Richards intercepted a Ross Schreur pass and took it to the Dordt three and Austin Ruskamp scored moments later for a 21-0 lead. Ruskamp scored less than three minutes later after the Defenders turned it over on downs at their own 24. Ruskamp carried it over from one yard out to cap the 24 yard drive and made the final 28-0.
Dordt’s best chance to score came when Jake Atkinson swiped a Zach Thorpe pass and took it to the Wesleyan 33. Dordt was unable to get a first down and eventually turned it over on downs with 1:09 left in the game and the hosts ran out the clock.
Dordt was outgained 346-100 with 52 yards on the ground while Wesleyan got most their yards in the air with 236.
Lenard Manuel ran for 40 yards on 14 carries and Erin Francis 20 yards on five carries. Ross Schreur was 3-11 passing for 24 yards and Thomas Newman was 3-7 for 24 yards as well. Sam Verhulst had four catches for 29 yards and Darryl Van Grouw two snags for 19 yards.
Wesleyan’s Joel Wiedel had nine carries for 54 yards and Tyler Francis completed 22-31 passes for 236 yards. Connor Zumpfe had six snags for 89 yards and a touchdown.
Vanoy Harris had a game high 12 tackles and Jake Atkinson had 10 with Seth Vande Voort nine.
Dordt is now 2-5 overall and 0-5 in league play while Nebraska Wesleyan is 4-2 in the GPAC and 4-3 overall. Dordt will host Northwestern on Saturday, October 26 in its next action.
