Dordt College Football vs. Trinity Bible

(Sioux Center, Iowa) Five touchdowns in the first half paved the way for a 56-27 win by the Dordt Defender football team over Trinity Bible College (North Dakota) on Saturday, October 12 in non-conference football in Sioux Center, Iowa.

The Defenders got on the board with 12:01 left in the first quarter when Cam Pitre picked off a Trinity Bible pass at the Trinity 28 yard line and Dordt scored five plays later when Thomas Newman found Darryl Van Grouw with a fade in the end zone for a 7-0 lead. Dordt scored again at the 7:57 mark when Daniel Fennig raced to the corner of the end zone to cap a five play, 26 yard drive and a 14-0 lead came after Barry Dykstra split the uprights with a point after kick.

Erin Francis gave Dordt its third score of the game when he found a seam and ran in from 20 yards out to cap a four play, 67 yard drive at the 14:24 mark of the first half. Trinity responded with a 77 yard drive that culminated with a nine yard pass from Taylor Martindale to David Rivera at the 12:31 mark to make it 21-8 after the two-point conversion was good.

Dordt managed two more scores with Lenard barreling in from five yards out to finish a 12 play, 61 yard drive that took 5:44 off the clock. Less than a minute later Thomas Newman scored to cap a drive that was set up by a Ray Cleveland interception and return to the Trinity two yard line. The 35-8 lead stood till halftime.

In the second half Dordt scored three times in a row to stretch the difference to 56-8. Manuel had another short run to finish a 49 yard drive and Michael Sisson scored his first college touchdown with an eight yard run with 5:25 left in the third conclude a six play, 68 yard drive. Kenny Lewis scored Dordt’s eight touchdown with a nine yard run at the 7:27 mark.

Trinity scored three unanswered touchdowns with less than six minutes to go to make the final 56-27.

The two teams combined for over 800 yards of offense. Dordt had 315 yards on the ground and 363 total while Trinity had 471 yards total with 308 in the air and 163 on the ground.

Dordt controlled the clock with 35:08 time of possession for the game.

Deniel Fennig ran for 104 yards on 12 carries and Lenard Manuel had 11 carries for 53 yards while Erin Francis had six carries for 50 yards. Newman completed 3-6 passes with a completion each to Sam Verhulst, Francis and Van Grouw. Verhulst’s grab was the longest of the three for 19 yards. Barry Dykstra was a perfect 8-8 on field goal tries.

Dordt picked off five passes with JT Teixera, Seth Vande Voort, Michael Knoblauch, Ray Cleveland and Cam Pitre all snagging a Trinity aerial.

Chris McDaniel had six solo and two assisted stops while Nick Payton and Jake Atkinson each had four and one tackle each. Seth Vande Voort had three solo and three assisted stops.

Johnny Perry had 119 yards on 21 rushing attempts and Donovon Flaherty completed 8-15 passes, most in the final minutes of the game, and had 147 yards including a 71 yard strike. David Rivera was on the receiving end of seven passes for 103 yards and three touchdowns for the Lions.

Dordt is 2-4 overall and has five GPAC games remaining on the schedule. Dordt will travel to Lincoln, Nebraska to face Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday, October 19 before returning home to face Northwestern in two weeks. Trinity Bible slips to 1-6 overall.
