Dordt College Football vs. Briar Cliff

(Vermillion, South Dakota) The Dordt College football team surrendered 34 second half points and lost a 54-14 decision to the Briar Cliff Chargers at the Dakota Dome in Vermillion, South Dakota on Saturday afternoon, September 28. The win was Briar Cliff’s first of the GPAC season.
Dordt never led, surrendering an 81 yard touchdown pass on Briar Cliff’s fourth play from scrimmage as Kevin Van Egdom found Matt Harshman at the 10:31 mark for a 6-0 lead.
The second Briar Cliff score came after a blocked punt gave the Chargers possession at the Dordt nine yard line and Mitch Heikes carried it in from seven yards out to make it 13-0 at the 3:57 mark of the first quarter.
Dordt answered with a 69 yard drive and scored on 34 yard pass from Thomas Newman to Sam Verhulst as time expired in the first quarter. Verhulst was able to wrestle the ball away from two Briar Cliff players as he fell into the end zone.
The two teams traded touchdowns in the second quarter. Briar Cliff struck for an 85 yard pass play with 11:01 left to finish a two play drive. Erin Francis raced in from 18 yards out to draw Dordt to within six at 20-14. Francis’s run capped a seven play, 71 yard drive.
Dordt looked poised to take the lead when they forced Briar Cliff punt with 1:26 left in the half. Dordt took it from their own 42 to the Briar Cliff 21, getting 25 yards on a pass from Newman to Verhulst but a pass into the end zone was intercepted and allowed Briar Cliff to get to halftime up 20-14.
Briar Cliff scored on its first two possessions of the third quarter with a seven play, 57 yard scoring drive and a 10 play, 54 yard drive to make it 34-14. Dordt put a drive together trying to answer but a Daniel Fennig dive to the corner of the end zone was short by a yard as time expired in the third quarter and the Defenders turned the ball over on downs.
Briar Cliff put the game away with a 99 yard catch and run by Van Egdom to Harshman on the first play of the second half to go up 40-14. Briar Cliff tacked on two more scores, one on an interception return with 5:09 left to make the final 54-14.
Dordt rushed for 300 yards on the ground and passed for 124 yards and was outgained 560-424. Lenard Manuel ran for 83 yards on 12 carries and Erin Francis had 61 yards on four carries. Daniel Fennig and Loken Vande Vegte ranfor 49 and 40 yards respectively. Thomas Newman passed for 88 yards on 6-13 passing and Verhulst was on the receiving end of six passes for 84 yards and a touchdown.
Seth Vande Voorthad 11 tackles and Jake Atkinson had eight tackles with an interception. Sean Quinlan had eight tackles and Micah Applegate got credit for a quarterback sack.
Van Egdom passed for 385 yards on 12-23 success and four touchdowns. Matt Harshman caught seven passes for 250 yards and snagged three touchdown passes. Kenny Thompson ran for 61 yards on nine carries and Mitch Heikes had 12 carries for 60 yards.
Dordt is 1-3 overall and 0-3 in league play. Dordt will host Concordia on Saturday, October 5 in its next outing. Briar Cliff is 1-3 overall and 1-2 in league play.
