Dordt College Football vs. Midland

(Sioux Center, Iowa) Dordt College came up short in their bid for a Great Plains Athletic Conference football win on Saturday, September 14 in Sioux Center, Iowa. The Defenders stood toe to toe with Midland and came away with a 21-18 loss after Midland scored in the closing minutes to retake the lead and the eventual win.
Midland scored on its first possession when they marched down the field and scored on a Alex Moreland 14 yard run with just under nine minutes remaining in the first quarter.
Dordt evened the score when they took advantage of a fumbled punt by Midland, setting up a 22 yard drive that Thomas Newman capped with a two yard plunge with 11:24 left in the half. Newman carried the football all three times on the abbreviated drive and Barry Dykstra's kick split the uprights for a 7-7 tie that stood to halftime.
Midland scored on an 11 play, 75 yard drive to start the second half as Michael Karls, Midland's quarterback, called his own number from three yards out to put the Warriors up 14-7.
Dordt answered back on the ensuing drive when Dykstra drilled a school record 49 yard field goal to cut the gap to 14-10. Another Midland miscue on punt team led to Dordt extending a drive later in the quarter and on the first play after the fumble Newman hit Sam Verhulst for a 47 yard strike that put Dordt up 16-10 when Dykstra's point after was blocked.
Dordt's punt team led indirectly to Dordt's final points when a punt was downed at the one yard line and on the very next play Midland's running back was downed in the end zone for a safety with 8:32 remaining in the game to put Dordt up 18-14.
With 5:07 left in the game the Defenders got one more gift as Midland fumbled yet another punt and Dordt took over at the Midland 29. After three running plays yielded four yards, Dykstra came on for another field goal attempt. This time the 40 yard attempt was wide right and Midland took over with just under three minutes remaining.
The Warriors wasted little time, going the needed 80 yards on five plays, capping the drive with a Corey Meshack three yard run.
Dordt's last chance ended with a late interception, sending the Defenders to 0-1 in league play.
Dordt was outgained 337-283 but Dordt outgained Midland 224-207 on the ground.
Thomas Newman ran for 60 yards as he got the start at quarterback for the injured Bryce Rusler. Trai Pickney gained 52 yards and Lenard Manuel 48. Seth Vande Voort led the Dordt defense with 13 tackles and Camren Pitre had six. Midland's Meshack had 94 yards and Karls 78 on the ground and 130 yards in the air. Nathan Schluter grabbed seven passes for 84 yards.
Dordt is 1-1 overall and will face Morningside next week. Midland improves to 2-0.
