Dordt College Football vs. Dakota Wesleyan

(Mitchell, South Dakota) The Dordt College Defender football team took the #25 ranked Dakota Wesleyan Tigers into the final quarter before falling 45-31 in a record setting performance for the Defenders. Missed opportunities proved to be the undoing of the Defenders in the two touchdown loss.

Dordt marched the football to the Dakota Wesleyan two yard line before a fumble ended the drive. Dordt got the ball back after a punt and marched 65 yards on 11 plays, capping the drive with a Bryce Rusler one yard touchdown plunge. Dordt tacked on a field goal for a 10-0 lead. Barry Dykstra knocked the 22 yard attempt through wtih 7:53 left in the first half.

Wesleyan struck back with a 53 yard pass from Jon Bane to Derek Carlson at the 6:57 mark of the half. Six minutes later the Bane to Carlson connection worked again for a 14-10 lead. This time the pass covered 22 yards.

Dordt nearly scored to close the half but a Dykstra field goal attempt from 38 yards was wide left and the half ended with the Defenders down by four.

Wesleyan marched the ball into Dordt territory to start the second half but the drive stalled at the Dordt ten and they had to settle for a field goal. Dakota Wesleyan attempted an onside kick on the ensuing kickoff and Dordt recovered at their own 43. It took ten plays, but Kyle Henricks rumbled in from ten yards out to even the score at 17-17 with 7:59 left in the quarter.

Wesleyan scored the next two touchdowns with Carlson reeling in a 73 yard reception and a five yarder to make it 31-17. Carlson's first four catches were all for touchdowns.

Trailng by two scores, the Defenders came back with Erin Francis catching a short pass and sprinted 74 yards to paydirt to cut the difference to 31-24.

Dordt's defense held and forced a punt and the Defenders took over at their own six. Dordt moved the ball into Wesleyan territory but a fumble near midfield was picked up and run in by Brady Bonte for a 38-24 lead with 3:34 left.

A Dordt 71 yard march on five plays again cut the gap to one score with Kyle Henricks getting in from two yards out for his second score of the day.

Dordt's defense forced a fourth down and one play on the next drive. With 1:41 left the Tigers went for it at their own 44 yard line and Josh Endres raced 56 yards on a sweep to put the game away 45-31.

Dordt gained a school record 691 yards on 91 plays from scrimmage. The previous mark was 455 yards. The Defenders gained 441 yards on the ground, easily besting the old record of 254 and Kyle Henricks threw for a team record 250 yards and he ran for another 62 for 312 total yards. Trai Pickney accounted for 113 yards on the ground, his second 100 yard game in a row and he caught three passes for 74 yards. Bryce Rusler had 16 carries for 88 yards before leaving the game late in the second quarter with an injury. Daniel Fennig had seven carries for 87 yards and Henricks gained 62 yards on 12 carries. Erin Francis had 99 yards on four receptions. Dordt did not punt the entire game.

Wesleyan gained 546 yards and got 399 through the air. Josh Endres ran for 136 yards on 19 carries. Jon Bane was 21-34 in passing for 399 yards. Derek Carlson caught five balls for 163 yards and four touchdowns.

Vanoy Harris had six solo and six unassisted stops and Seth Vande Voort had four solo and three assisted stops. Raymond Cleveland had two tackles for loss. Wesleyan's Brady Bonte had six solo and 13 assisted stops.

Dordt is 0-6 overall and 0-5 in the GPAC and will host Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday, October 13. Wesleyan is 3-1 in the GPAC and 4-1 overall.
