(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender football won their season opener on Saturday, September 3 by a 16-0 margin over the Waldorf (Iowa) Warriors.

The Dordt offense was opportunistic as they took advantage of two Waldorf turnovers for short field scores.

The first Defender score cam eat the 6:53 mark of the first half when Josh Van Kempen scored on a one yard plunge to cap an eight play-42 yard drive that was set up when Jonathan Gardner stripped Ryan Young, the Waldorf quarterback and Seth Vande Voort recovered it.

Waldorf nearly evened the score late in the first half but had time run out on their drive as they had no timeouts left to stop the clock when they were tackled in the middle of the field at the Dordt 18. Again it was Gardner making the stop.

Dordt scored in the third quarter with 9:06 remaining when Jon Luetchens intercepted a deflected Waldorf pass and went 76 yards to the Warrior four and Aaron Floen ran it in on the next play for a 14-0 lead after the Barry Dykstra kick.

Dordt's final points came when Waldorf snapped the football out of their own endzone on a punt with 4:28 left and that's how it ended.

Dordt's defense held Waldorf to 171 total yards of offense. Matt Postmus had six solo and four assisted tackles while Seth Vande Voort had five solo and three assists. Sam Ashmore was in on five assisted tackles and two solo stops and Marc Mexia had four solo tackles and a forced fumble. Gardner got credit for two sacks and a forced fumble. Luetchens had his interception and a fumble recovery with two solo tackles.

Aaron Floen led the offense with 15 carries and 70 yards. Josh Van Kempen gained 40 yards on 21 carries. Justin Knot was 4-10 for 36 yards and Trai Pickney had three catches for eight yards and Sam Du Mez caught two for 18. Josh Van Kempen gained 18 yards on his single catch.

Dordt is 1-0 and will travel to Hastings next week for the GPAC opener for both teams. Waldorf will host Briar Cliff next Saturday in another non-conference contest.
