October 15, 2011

(Lincoln, Nebraska) The Dordt Defender football team was on the short end of a 45-19 decision at Nebraska Wesleyan in Lincoln, Nebraska on Saturday afternoon, October 15.

Dordt scored first with a 70 yard drive that took 12 plays to complete. The Defenders converted a fourth down try to extend the drive when Dylan Doebler scrambled from the Wesleyan 34 to the 28. A Daniel Fennig run for five yards got the Defenders to the 23 and three straight completions had the Defenders at the one for a first and goal. The final completion of the three was 17 yard aerial to David Griess from Doebler. Fennig then scored, following the left side of the offensive line into the end zone for the eventual 7-0 lead.

Wesleyan struck on the next play with Cody Eiler racing 89 yards for the tie with 00:08 left in the first quarter.

Dordt failed to move the ball on the first possession of the second quarter and Wesleyan marched 25 yards after the put, getting the final 35 yards on a Taylor Stockamp run for a 14-7 margin. The Defenders again struggled to advance the ball on their next possesion and after a punt that was pulled out of bounds for ten yards, the Prairie Wolves took over at the Defender 28 and went the distance on five plays with Nate Jones getting the last four rushing plays for a 21-7 lead. Wesleyan got one more short field to work with when Darryl Van Grouw's punt was returned 19 yards to the Defender 38 and the Wolves scored on the very next play on a pass from Ethan Myers to Joe Manley.

Needing something positive on the first drive of the second half the Defenders got a five yard gain on the first play but a fumble on the next snap put the Wolves in position to stretch the lead out and they did with a 10 play, 64 yard drive that made the score 35-7 at the 9:06 mark of the third period.

Dordt's defense got the next score when Aaron Hicks picked off a Myers pass and raced 34 yards for the score. Myers was pressured on the play by Jonathan Gardner which allowed Hicks to pick off the floater.

Wesleyan knocked a 42 yard field goal through for a 38-13 lead and scored on a ten play, 56 yard drive at the 5:00 mark for a 45-13 advantage. Dordt got the final score of the game on a 63 yard option pitch from Justin Knot to Trai Pickney and Pickney scored on a pair of cutback moves near the sideline with 1:38 left.
