Dordt College Football vs. Briar Cliff

(Sioux City, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender football team lost an overtime decision to the Briar Cliff Chargers in Sioux City, Iowa on Saturday afternoon, October 1 by a 16-10 decision. For the second week in a row the Defenders led as late as the third quarter but were unable to hold the Chargers off in the GPAC football contest.
Dordt scored first when Chandler Kurth found Sam Du Mez in the back of the end zone for a touchdown that capped a 12 play 67 yard drive with 6:00 left in the first half. The score remained 7-0 at halftime with Briar Cliff struggling to move the football with seven penalties for over 70 yards in the first half of play.
Dordt scored again in the third period when Barry Dykstra split the uprights with a 19 yard field goal to finish a seven play, 17 yard drive that was set up by a fumble by the Chargers at their own 19 yard line that Dordt recovered. The Defenders actually got to the end zone only to have the play called back by a holding penalty at the goal line. Dordt's opportunities were limited the rest of the way with Briar Cliff finally getting on the board with 10:32 left in the game when Jared Williams plowed in from one yard out to finish a 12 play, 50 yard drive. Dordt was unable to move the football on their next possession and Lucas Carls had his punt blocked, giving Briar Cliff a the 25. Briar Cliff tied the game with an eventual Derek Beisner 26 yard field goal with 6:47 left.
Dordt moved the ball to the Briar Cliff 36 yard line but was forced to punt with 4:24 left and Briar Cliff took over at its own 20 after a touchback. The Chargers proceeded to push the ball down field with Jared Williams getting seven carries. The drive stalled at the Dordt nine and with 00:02 left in regulation lined up for a 26 yard field goal to win it. Dordt was able to block the kick to go to overtime.
Dordt's first possession of overtime resulted in a first down and then an interception and Briar Cliff scored on their third play of the overtime on a Williams 13 yard run up the middle.
Both teams gained 229 yards of offense. Dordt rushed for 105 net yards while Briar Cliff had 171. The Defenders had 124 yards passing while the Chargers were limited to 58.
Dordt's Daniel Fennig ran for 109 yards on 21 carries and Kurth completed 14-26 passes for 124 yards. David Griess caught five passes for 52 yards and Sam Du Mez had three for 34 yards and a touchdown.
Briar Cliff's Jared Williams had 155 yards on 34 carries and two touchdowns.
Will McClain and Seth Vande Voort both had three solo and seven assisted tackles while Jon Luetchens had an interception. Jonathan Gardner was credited with two sacks.
Briar Cliff got seven solo and six assisted tackles from Luke Grossnickle.
Dordt is 0-4 in the league and 1-4 overall while Briar Cliff is 2-3 and 1-3 in the conference. Dordt is scheduled to host Dakota Wesleyan on Saturday, October 8.
