Dordt College Football vs. Hastings

(Hastings, Nebraska) A touchdown with 3:44 left to go in the game sealed the Great Plains Athletic Conference opener for the Hastings College Broncos on Saturday, September 10 over the Dordt Defenders by a final of 28-14.
Dordt had put the pressure on the hosts with an 81 yard drive, capping that possession with a fourth down and goal completion from Justin Knot to David Griess to cut the difference to 21-14. The ensuing onside kick was recovered by Hastings and Keenan Ballage broke through the line of scrimmage on the first play of the drive to give Hastings a 28-14 lead and the eventual win.
Hastings scored two quick touchdowns in the second quarter, driving 62 yards on 15 plays for a score with 13:21 left in the half. Dordt turned the ball over on the first play of their next drive, giving the Broncos a short field and the hosts converted on a Travis Brown 18 yard reception from John Dostal to make it 14-0 at the time.
Dordt got on the board late in the half when Sam Du Mez hauled in a six yard Knot aerial with 1:00 left. The drive was set up when Todd Green stripped the football from a Hastings ball carrier and recovered the fumble.
Hastings took advantage of a Dordt turnover in teh third quarter when they went 46 yards on 12 plays in the third period and Terry Waiters rambled in to make the score 21-7, setting up the final period when the two teams traded the late touchdowns.
Hastings had good field position through out the third period, starting in Dordt territory on four straight drives. Both teams missed chances to score with Dordt missing a field goal and Hastings missed two.
Dordt's defense was led by Will McClain with eight solo and three assisted tackles while Todd Green had four solo and three assisted stops. Matt Postmus and Austin Bosma each had four solo stops and McClain was credited with three pass break-ups.
David Griess caught six passes for 73 yards and Knot was 14-26 for 151 yards. Dordt's leading ground gainer was Lenard Manuel with 41 yards.
Ballage ran for 113 yards on 16 carries for the Broncos and John Dostal passed for 121 yards and four touchdowns and ran for another 69 yards.
Dordt will face Midland in Sioux Center on Saturday, September 17 in its next outing.
