Dordt College Football vs. Briar Cliff
October 2, 2010
(Sioux Center, Iowa) Two Briar Cliff touchdowns in the fourth quarter put the Great Plains Athletic Conference football game out of reach on Saturday, October 2, in a 17-7 win for the Chargers over Dordt College.
The match up of two teams looking for their first wins in conference play was 0-0 at halftime before Briar Cliff scored near the midpoint of the third period on a Brian Castellanos 40 yard field goal that was set up by an interception return to the Dordt 22 by Briar Cliff's Caleb Young. Young picked off a Justin Knot pass at the Briar Cliff 23 and returned it 55 yards. Dordt got the ball deep in Briar Cliff territory by virtue of Todd Green's fumble recovery of a botched fumble return by Briar Cliff on the previous drive.
Briar Cliff then strung together a 14 play-62 yard drive to end the third quarter and start the fourth quarter and capped it with a Lehi Tonga pass to Chase Colvin for a 10-0 lead with a little over eleven minutes left in the game. The Chargers then put the game away with an 82 yard drive that Colvin again capped with a 57 yard catch with 6:38 left in the game.
Dordt got on the board with a seven play, 54 yard drive as Josh Van Kempen caught a two yard pass from Justin Knot with 4:20 left in the game. Dordt got the ball back once more and worked the ball to the Briar Cliff 16 where the drive stalled on a fourth down incompletion that slipped through a receiver's arms in the end zone with 00:52 left, effectively ending the Dordt threat.
The Dordt defense limited Briar Cliff to six yards of rushing offense but the Chargers did get 292 yards through the air. Dordt gained 52 yards on the ground and 175 yards in passing.
Seth Vande Voort had eight solo and four assisted stops with a sack while Josh Nollmeyer had eight solo stops and Todd Green had six solo, three assisted tackles and one sack with Matt Postmus getting six solo tackles with one sack.
Sam Du Mez caught three passes for 77 yards and Justin Knot was 13-35 through the air for 175 yards. Josh Van Kempen caught three passes and ran for 55 yards on 12 carries.
Briar Cliff's Lehi Tonga had 292 yards in the air on 30-47 passing with two touchdowns and one interception. Chase Colvin caught nine passes for 163 yards and two scores.
Dordt is now 0-5 overall and 0-5 in the GPAC while Briar Cliff improves to 2-3 overall and 1-3 in the league. Dordt will face Morningside on Saturday, October 9 in the next action for the Defenders.
