Dordt College Football vs. Doane

(Crete, Nebraska) Touchdowns on three straight possessions to start the second half gave the Doane Tigers a 36-10 win over Dordt College in football play on Saturday, September 11 in Crete, Nebraska. Dordt had closed the gap to 16-10 early in the second half only to have the hosts extend their lead with three scoring drives.
Doane scored on its first two possessions of the game, going 68 yards on six plays to open the game. The scoring strike came on a pass from Anthony Dunn to Jeremiah Saffold for 11 yards. The Dordt offense was forced to punt and Doane scored on the ensuing drive when Dunn found Blake Erickson for a 30 yard touchdown pass to cap a four play-61 yard drive and made it 13-0 after a missed field goal with 7:52 left in the first quarter.
Dordt then embarked on a 17 play drive that carried them all the way to the Doane one after starting at their own 24. The drive included a fourth down conversion on a pass to Sam Du Mez, but ended on an interception on third down and goal.
After a Doane punt Dordt marched 41 yards on eight plays and C. J. Lenarz split the uprights with a 21 yard field goal to make it 13-3. Doane got a field goal back to close the half and took a 16-3 lead into the intermission.
Dordt took the opening drive 91 yards in the second half to draw to within 16-10. The scoring strike was a 55 yard completion to Sam Du Mez from Micah Twedell. Twedell was in at quarterback for the injured Justin Knot who was shaken up near the end of the first half.
Doane then scored on drives of 83, 17 and 47 yards to put the game out of reach.
Dordt was outgained 398-268. Dordt churned out 103 yards on he ground and allowed 55 Doane rushing yards. Doane had 343 yards passing and Dordt 165.
Aaron Floen ran for 45 yards on 15 carries and Josh Van Kempen had nine carries for 38 yards. Charles Milton gained 23 yards on six carries. Micah Twedell completed 6-13 passes for 107 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Knot was 5-11 with an interception for 58 yards. Du Mez caught five passes for 111 yards while David Griess and Aaron Floen had two catches each for 21 and 16 yards each.
Doane's Anthony Dunn was 19-24 through the air for five touchdown passes. Jesse Ver Velde caught four passes for 78 yards and ran for another 13 yards on three carries. Jeremiah Saffold had four catches for 37 yards and Erickson caught three aerials for 85 yards.
Will McClain was credited with four solo tackles and two assisted stops on defense. Derek De Jong had four solos and one assist and Henry Byl had two solos and five assists. Brandon Huisman was in on seven tackles and Josh Nollmeyer picked off a pass at the end of regulation.
Dordt is now 0-2 and will host Hastings on Saturday, September 18 at 1:30. Doane, now 1-1, travels to Sioux Falls.
