(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender football team lost a 27-3 decision to #17 ranked Hastings College in Sioux Center on Saturday afternoon in Great Plains Athetic Conference action. Penalties proved to be costly in this one with Dordt getting one touchdown taken away by penalty and another fourth down conversion deep in Hastings territory was taken away as well.
In the end it was Hastings' ability to run the ball and control the clock that proved too much for Dordt to overcome.
Dordt took possession of the football for the first time after Austin Bosma forced a fumble and Josh Nollmeyer was there to recover it at the Dordt 40 yard line. Dordt moved the ball down the field to the Hastings 11 when Justin Knot found Joey Vander Schaaf for an apparent touchdown. The score was taken away as Dordt called for a holding penalty and forced Dordt into a second and 20 play. Dordt would eventually get back to the 11 and lined up for a field goal. The snap was high and the holder Morgan Halpert had to go up to get it and by the time Dordt got the kick off the Hastings special teams were able to get a hand on it. Hastings eventually scored on a 23 yard field goal at the 5:40 mark of the first quarter and tacked on a touchdown early in the second quarter for a 10-0 lead with Maurice Mansfield rushing six yards for the score.
Hastings scored on their next possession, a 35 yard drive set up by a defensive stand that forced Dordt to punt from their end zone. This time it was Troy Huebert finding Calvin Pettigrew for a five yard touchdown pass with 6:09 left in the half.
Dordt threatened on their next drive when they moved from their own 25 into Hastings territory with Josh Van Kempen grabbing a 26 yard pass from Justin Knot. Later in the drive, facing fourth and six, the Defenders seemingly converted on an Aaron Floen run for 27 yards to the Hastings seven, only to have the play negated by a holding penalty. Dordt was forced to punt and Hastings ran the remaining time off the clock to go to halftime leading 17-0.
Hastings scored on their first drive of the second half, a drive that resulted in a 25 yard Ernesto Lacayo field goal with 10:57 left in the quarter. Dordt responded with their first points getting a Reuben Faber field goal through from 43 yards out to cap a 12 play, 61 yard drive that was kept alive by a third down run of eight yards on third and seven by Knot.
The Broncos finished the scoring with an eight play, 77 yard drive on the next drive and that's how the game ended.
Hastings outgained Dordt 423-198 with 284 yards on the ground to Dordt's 82. Dordt did get 116 yards of passing offense. Hastings had the ball for 33:07 and Dordt 26:53. Knot had 32 yards on 10 carries and completed 14-24 passes. Josh Van Kempen had four catches for 49 yards and Sam Du Mez caught three for 43 yards.
