Dordt College Football vs. Waldorf

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender football evened their record at 1-1 with a come from behind 32-17 win over the Waldorf (Iowa) Warriors in non-conference football at Sioux Center. The Defenders scored first and then scored 29 unanswered points on the way to the win.
Dordt scored first when Reuben Faber booted a 44 yard field goal with 11:04 left in the first quarter to cap a seven play 26 yard drive. Waldorf responded with a 79 yard drive that took 5:43 off the clock and culminated with a nine yard run by a Jeff Buron with 5:15 on the clock to make it 7-3 after the extra point. Dordt was poised to retake the lead after taking the ball inside the Waldorf five on a Josh Van Kempen 62 yard run but were held out on their next four tries and Waldorf took over on downs. The two teams traded possessions with a Faber punt pinning Waldorf at their own one yard line. The Warriors responded with a 99 yard drive that gave them a 14-3 lead on a Deonte Lewis one yard run with 8:49 left in the half.
Needing offense, the Defenders got it with a 69 yard drive that was capped by a Charles Milton touchdown run with 5:00 left in the half. The Dordt defense held with Curtis Van Grouw catching the Waldorf quarterback twice for a loss and Dordt drove 54 yards in less than a minute, getting a score with :01 on the first half clock for a 15-14 lead after the two point conversion failed. Dordt opened the second half with the ball and used a short field to extend their lead. Van Kempen returned the kickoff to the Waldorf 22 and eventually scored on a one yard plunge with 12:16 left.
Faber booted another field goal from 32 yards out at the 2:01 mark and neither team scored until the 8:09 mark of the game when Waldorf got a field goal to get within 25-17. On the first play from scrimmage after the kickoff the Defenders went to the air and Justin Knot found Darrin Beekman over the top for a 61 yard pass that as much as sealed the win at 32-17 with 7:53 left. Dordt ran the clock out on their final possession.
Dordt outgained the Warriors 433-282 and had 254 yards on the ground. Van Kempen had 103 yards on 16 carries and Ben Robbins had seven carries for 79 yards. Milton had nine rushes for 70 yards. Justin Knot completed 9-14 passes for 149 yards and Same Du Mez and Kameron Gradert had three catches each for 34 and 24 yards. Joey Vander Schaaf had two catches for 28 yards and Darrin Beekman had his catch for 61.
Dordt's defense was led by Eric Torgerson with five solo tackles and two for loss while Will McClain had four solos and two assists. Lucas Kurtzleben was in on four solos and two assists as well and Brice Kroeze and Tyler Te Grotenhuis had three solos and two assists each. Austin Bosma had an interception in the first half.
Dordt will host Morningside on Saturday, September 19 at 1:00.
