Dordt College Football vs. Iowa Central

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender football team earned their second win in a row and improved their 2008 record to 2-4 for the season with a 14-6 win over a team from Iowa Central Community College Monday night, October 8.
The Defenders and Tritons played to a scoreless first half tie with Iow aCentral getting the best chance, a field goal attempt with under a minute left in the half that was wide right. The Tritons had four drives end inside the Dordt 35 but came away with no points.
The Defenders finally broke through for a touchdown early in the third quarter when they got good field position after an Iowa Central punt. Dordt when they needed 47 yards on five carries. The drive was capped when Adam Shirley punched it in from less than a yard out after a Joey Vander Schaaf run to inside the one. The touchdown was set up by a couple Derek Kammerlocher carries.
Iowa Central used a 52 yard drive to cut the lead down to 7-6 with 1:51 left in the third quarter on a Marcus Hilliard nine yard run to cap the seven play drive. The point after was no good and Dordt responded immediately with a three play-52 yard drive, capped by a Derek Kammerlocher five yard touchdown. The scoring play was set up by a 35 yard pass from Adam Shirley to Ryan Campbell.
Iowa Central threatened in the fourth quarter but stalled out at the Dordt 33 and the Dordt 23. Dordt missed an opportunity to salt the game away when they turned it over at the Iowa Central 33 on an interception.
Derek Kammerocher had 24 carries for 119 yards and a touchdown and Ben Robbins got 41 yards on eight carries. Adam Shirley completed four passes, two to Ryan Campbell and two to Ben Robbins for 48 and 13 yards respectively. Dordt outgained Iowa Central narrowly 241-236 with 180 yards on the ground and 61 yards through the air. Iowa Central gained nine yards through the air and the balance on the ground.
Willie Smoot had seven solo and nine assisted stops wtih three tackles for loss. Fred Leyendekker had six solo and four assisted stops, one sack and 3.5 tackles for loss. Jake Esselink had five solo and three assisted tackls and Morgan Halpert was in on five solo tackles. Seth Denton and Chris Minnema each had a fumble recovery and Justin Sammons was credited with two pass breakups.
Dordt is now 2-4 and will face Morningside on Monday, October 22 at 6:00 in Sioux City.
