Dordt College Football vs. Briar Cliff

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender football team earned their first ever win with a 42-21 win over a Briar Cliff University Junior Varsity team at Open Space Park in Sioux Center, Iowa Monday night.
The Defenders used the big play and turnovers to hold the Chargers off in the second meeting of the two teams.
Dordt scored first when Chris Minnema snagged a Briar Cliff pass attempt at the Charger nine yard line. On third and goal Derek Kammerlocher punched the ball in for a touchdown, giving the Defenders a 7-0 lead after a Nick Sohre point after with 3:47 left in the first quarter. Kammerlocher figured into the second touchdown as well when he went 45 yards, capping a 71 yard-six play drive with 11:17 left in the half and Sohre made it 14-0 after the kick.
Briar Cliff took the ensuing possession and went over the top of the Dordt College defense on several pass plays, completing an 11 yard pass from Ryan Hajek to Eric Lindsay trim the lead to 14-7 with 6:33 left in the half. The drive covered 65 yards on ten plays. Briar Cliff then caught a break when they recovered a high and short kick in Dordt College territory but Fred Leyendekker stepped in front of a Ryan Hajek pass and went 71 yards for a touchdown, re-establishing a two-score advantage wtih 5:07 left. After holding on defense, the Defenders got the ball back and Adam Shirley found Joey Vander Schaaf wide open for a 65 yard pass play over the middle to give Dordt a 28-7 halftime lead. The completion to Vander Schaaf came with 2:59 left in the half.
Leyendekker made his presence felt again with 14:29 left in in the third quarter when he tipped and controlled a Ryan Hajek pass and went 47 yards for a touchdown that gave Dordt a 35-7 lead.
Briar Cliff would come back and make a game of it though, scoring with 10:58 left in the third on a Jon Gregory pass from Ryan Hajek that covered 18 yards and concluded an eight play-60 yard drive. The Chargers made it 35-21 with 12:40 left in the game on a Jason Christopherson crossing patttern in the end zone on a pass from Lane Claussen. The Chargers recovered the ensuing onside kick and marched the ball into Dordt territory where Justin Sammons made a drive stopping interception off a deflection--diving to make the play and on the second play of the drive, Derek Kammerlocher raced 78 yards for the clinching touchdown making the final 42-21.
Dordt was outgained by Briar Cliff 359-357 with 240 of their yards coming on yards coming on the ground. Briar Cliff countered with 269 yards of pass completions. Kammerlocher had three touchdowns and 162 yards of rushing on 18 carries while Ben Robbins had 15 totes for the Defenders and 68 yards. Adam Shirley connected for four completions with Joey Vander Schaaf on the receiving end of two of them for 102 yards and Aaron Huisman and Josh Clark each had a catch.
Leyendekker had two pass interceptions and nearly a third while Morgan Halpert, Chris Minnema, Ausin Turner and Justin Sammons each had an interception as the Defenders forced six turnovers. Jake Dykstra had seven solo tackles at cornerback and broke up four passes while Chris Minnema had five solos and three assisted stops. Dan Jansen was in on four solos and three assists and Zach Dierks made five solo stops, three of them for loss and two were quarterback sacks. Seth Denton made two sacks and three tackles for loss.
Scott Peterson had six solo tackles for Briar Cliff. Ryan Hajek completed 17-33 passes for the Chargers for 199 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions while Lane Claussen was 7-27 through the air for 70 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
The Defenders will face a team from Iowa Central (Fort Dodge, Iowa) in Pocahontas, Iowa on Monday, October 8. The game will kick off at 6:00 and will be played at the Pocahontas Area High School Football Field.
