Dordt College Football vs. Buena Vista

(Storm Lake, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender club football team fell to 0-2 Monday night with a 27-17 loss to a junior varsity team from Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa. Official stats for the game were not immediately available after the contest.
The Defenders surrendered a Buena Vista touchdown on a 36 yard scoring strike from Matt Peary to Dean Mosher with 9:57 left in the first quarter, capping a 68 yard scoring drive with the pass over the middle.
Dordt's offense responded with a lengthy drive of their own, culminating with a 22 yard field goal by Nick Sohre to cap a nine play-70 yard drive, trimming the lead to 7-3 with 6:31 left in the first quarter. Buena Vista scored again on their next drive, this time going 63 yards on four plays with Peary again finding Mosher for a 26 yard pass with 4:51 left in the first quarter. The kick was blocked and Dordt trailed 13-3.
Dordt got some momentum back in the second quarter when the Defenders forced a fumble and Dan Jansen recovered at the 13 yard line. Dordt needed just three plays and Ben Robbins took the ball in from six yards out to make the score 13-10 after the Sohre extra point.
Dordt then took the lead when they again recovered a fumble at the Buena Vista 45 yard line. Derek Kammerlocher rambled 38 yards on the third play of the drive to give Dordt a 17-13 lead when Sohre's kick split the uprights with 4:16 left in the half.
Buena Vista gave the ball up on another fumble but this time the Defenders were unable to capitalize, turning the ball over on downs with with about three minutes left in the half and the Beavers made the most of the opportunity, eventually converting a fourth down pass to Brody Moore in the back of the end zone for a score with :11 left in the half. Buena Vista converted the point after and they held a 20-17 lead at the break.
Dordt took the opening drive of the second half and marched to the Buena Vista one yard line where Dordt lost the footbal on a fumble, preventing the go-ahead score.
Buena Vista eventually scored a touchdown when they took the ball away from the Defenders on the six yard line and scored one play later with 10:47 left in the game on a Brandon Phelan run for the eventual final.
Dordt did threaten on their next drive, moving to the Buena Vista 26 before giving the ball up on downs with 7:32 left and got it to the Buena Vista 31 again with 3:16 left, turning it over on downs.
The unofficial stats showed Dordt with 188 yards of rushing offense with Derek Kammerlocher running for 99 yards on 13 carries. Joey Vander Schaaf had 69 yards on eight carries and Adam Shirley completed 12 passes for 116 yards. Ryan Campbell was on the receiving end of eight aerials for 94 yards--one for 34 yards and Josh Clark had four catches for 23 yards.
Morgan Halpert and Jake Dykstra each had one pass interception and Dykstra was credited with four solo tackles on defense. Willie Smoot had three tackles and two assisted stops while Morgan Halpert had three solo tackles.
Dordt is now 0-2 and will play Briar Cliff on Monday, September 17 at 6:00 in Sioux Center.
