Dordt College Football vs. Morningside
September 3, 2007
(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender football program played their first ever football game on September 3 at Open Space Park in Sioux Center, Iowa and came away with a 15-7 loss to a Morningside College (Iowa) junior varsity team. The game turned out to be a defensive struggle with both teams struggling to string together drives.
The Mustangs struck first when Danny Pribil scooped up a fumble on a Dordt College punt return and went 40 yards for a touchdown with 9:11 remaining in the first half. The Mustangs continued to threaten in the first half and the Defender defense continued to hold, keeping the Mustangs out of the end zone for the remainder of the first half. Dordt forced four interceptions in the first half, two by Jake Dykstra. Dordt stopped the Morningside offense three times inside their own 25 and five times inside the 40.
Dordt got on the board in the third quarter when Seth Denton scooped up a fumble and raced to the Morningside 32 yard line. The Dordt offense then punched the ball in on a Derek Kammerlocher five yard run with 3:17 remaining in the quarter. Dordt then forced a fumble on Morningside's next play from scrimmage and took over at the Mustang 20. After three plays and four yards gained the Defenders attempted a 33 yard field goal by Nick Sohre and narrowly missed wide right. Morningside drove to the Dordt 10 on the ensuing drive but couldn't punch it in. Dordt took over and couldn't move the ball and ended up punting from their own end zone. Sohre's kick fielded at the 39 and returned to the 12 and the Mustangs punched it in on second and goal after 22 yard gain on third and 21. Morningside got the touchdown run by Andrew Woodard with 10:16 remaining in the game and converted a broken play for two points for a 15-7 lead. Dordt moved the ball into Morningside territory on their most sustained drive of the game before stalling at the 21. The 11 play, 42 yard drive ended on an incompletion with 3:33 left and Morningside gained one first down on the ensuing drive, converting a fourth and one on a fake punt at their own 37 to keep the drive alive.
