Paced by Michelle Steiger's fifth place finish the Dordt Defender women's cross country team took seventh place in the team race at the Mount Marty Invite run near Yankton, South Dakota. Dordt totaled 230 points and was 14 points behind Minot State in the 20 team field. Black Hills State won the meet with 72 points and Runa Falch finished first in the medalist competition with a 17:38 over the 5,000 meter course.
Steiger finished in 18:22 while Merissa Harkema crossed the line in 21st place with a time of 19:01. Anna Jefferson clipped off a 20:00 time for 57th overall and Rachel Werkhoven was 75th in a time of 20:22. Katie Bonnema completed the Dordt scoring with a time of 20:34 which was good for 80th in the 208 runner field.
The Defender men turned in a sixth place finish out of 21 teams and totaled 192 points. Fifth place was Wayne State with a 145. Concordia won the men's race with 73 points and Jackson Brainerd of Colorado College won the 8,000 meter race with a time of 24:42.
Josiah Luttjeboer and Ryan Tholen went 1-2 for Dordt with times of 26:29 and 26:33 for 29th and 33rd overall. Stephan McNamara and Tim Bierma weren't far off the pace with times of 26:56 and 27:01 respectively for 44th and 48th. Dordt's Eric Tudor concluded the top five for Dordt with a 27:30 for 66th with a total of 236 runners competing.
Dordt's next action will be at the GPAC Championships on the same Yankton course on Saturday, November 6.
