(GPAC Championships) The Dordt College Defenders will send two runners to the NAIA National Meet with their finishes at the Great Plains Athletic Conference Championship Meet in Fremont, Nebraska.
Dordt's Michelle Steiger finished eighth in the women's race with a time of 18:47 over the 5,000 meter course and Brent Van Schepen was 15th in the conference meet, qualifying for nationals for the second straight season with a time of 25:59. Both earn all-GPAC honors with their finishes. The NAIA National Meet is scheduled for Saturday, November 21 in Vancouver, Washington.
The Defender men placed fifth in the team race with a total of 156 points while Concordia claimed the title with 26 points. Dordt just narrowly missed fourth place with Dana sneaking in front of them with 149 points. Mark Eekhoff was the second runner across in 34th place in a time of 27:02 and Ryan Tholen was 35th in 27:03.
The women placed seventh with a team total of 195. Michelle Duncan was the second Dordt runner to complete the course as she came across in 40th with a time of 20:02 and Rachel Werkhoven was 42nd in 20:07. Merissa Harkema, who had been Dordt's number two runner most of the season, was unable to finish the race. The freshman from Michigan has been battling illness for the past week.
107 women competed in the race with 110 runners taking part on the men's side.
