(Storm Lake, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender women's and men's cross country teams took the team titles at the Buena Vista Invite in Storm Lake, Iowa on Saturday, September 26. The Defender men pulled off the rare feat of scoring a perfect 15 points, sweeping the top six spots and beating Northwestern's second place total of 57.
Dordt was led by Brent Van Schepen in the race with a medalist time of 26:54. David Christensen was second in 27:04 and Mark Eekhoff ran the 8,000 meter course in a time of 27:09. Josiah Luttjeboer and Ryan Tholen completed the Dordt scoring in 27:10 and 27:20 respectively.
Dordt's women scored a low of 29 points in beating second place Northwestern's 35. Michelle Steiger was the women's champion in 23:41 and Merissa Harkema claimed second in 24:20. The women's course was 6,000 meters as opposed to the typical 5,000 meter course the women normally compete on. Rachel Werhoven was sixth in a time of 24:54 and Sierra Zomer and Becca Van Dam rounded out the top five with eight place and 14th place respectively. Zomer's time was 25:02 and Van Dam completed the course in 25:32.
The women's field included 50 runners and the men's competition featured 65 runners. Dordt will run in a meet on October 10 hosted by Briar Cliff in Sioux City, Iowa.
