(Vermillion, South Dakota) The Dordt College Defender women's cross country team took a fifth place finish at the Mount Marty Invite hosted by the University of South Dakota in Vermillion and the brought home a sixth place finish in their final tune-up before the Great Plains Athletic Conference Championships in two weeks.
The Defneder women totaled 142 points with South Dakota winning the meet with 52 points. Dordt was led by Jen Kempers' second place finish of 18:07. The senior missed medalist honors for just the second time this year on the 5000 meter course. Tami Wieringa was eighth in 19:06 and Kelsey Verkaik and Steph Helmus were 42nd and 47th respectively in 20:04 and 20:16. Dordt's scoring was completed by Michelle Steiger's time of 20:26 for 52nd place.
The Dordt men were led by Brent Van Schepen with a 15th place time of 26:48. Dordt totaled 179 points while Concordia won the meet with 34. Mark Eekhoff, Jathan Robinson and Josiah Luttjeboer were 42nd, 43rd and 46th respectively in times of 27:36, 27:39 and 27:48. David Christensen was Dordt's final scorer with a 61st time of 28:23. 142 runners competed in the men's 8000 meter race while 157 women covered the 5000 meter course.
Dordt's next action is in two weeks when they run at Hastings, Nebraska in the conference meet on November 8.
