(Sioux City, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender women's cross country team scored a victory and the men a second place finish Saturday, October 11 at a meet hosted by Briar Cliff at McCook Lake, South Dakota.
The Defender women posted a first place total of 57 and were led by Jen Kempers individual title time of 17:40 for the 5000 meter course. Kempers was :53 in front of her nearest competitor in taking her fourth individual medalist honors of the season in five races. Dordt's Tami Wieringa was seventh and freshman Michelle Steiger was tenth overall with times of 19:04 and 19:14 respectively. Steph Helmus was 21st in 19:53 and Rachel Werkhoven was 45th with a time of 20:52 for Dordt's final counter in the standings. Marne De Bruin and Lisa Goedhart were 48th and 50th to fill out the Dordt top-seven in times of 21:06 and 21:15.
The Dordt women beat a pair of nationally ranked teams in Morningside and Concordia. Morningside had 68 points to Dordt's 57 and Concordia had 71. Individual places listed are over placings, not point places.
The Dordt men were nipped by Concordia's total of 68 and the Defenders had 72. Morningside was third with 104.
The Defender men were paced by Brent Van Schepen's 8th place time of 26:52 while Eric Tudor continued his strong freshman season with a time of 27:27 over the 8000 meter course for 12th place. Jathan Robinson clocked a 27:41 for 19th and Devin Van't Hof was 24th with a time of 27:48. David Christensen was 25th to complete the counters with a time of 27:49 and Mark Eekhoff and Jon Vroom pushed the pack down with times of 27:54 and 28:26 for 27th and 45th respectively.
Dordt travels to the Mount Marty Invite in two weeks, October 25.
