(Madison, South Dakota) The Dordt College Defenders women's cross country team raced to a team title at the Dakota State Invitational Saturday, September 27 in Madison, South Dakota. The Defenders were led by Jen Kempers, the individual champion, and Tami Wieringa with an eighth place overall finish to beat Wayne State by 11 points in the final standings. Dordt had 67 points and Wayne State 78 for second place in the event that featured 10 full teams and 113 runners who completed the 5000 meter course. The Dordt men were third with 102 points as Wayne State took the men's division with a low of 24. 111 men completed the 8000 meter course and 11 complete teams figured into the final standings. Brent Van Schepen was Dordt's top finisher with a 16th place time of 27:11.
Kempers won the women's race with a time of 17:46 and Wieringa had a 19:38. Kelsey Ver Kaik took 17th in 19:57 while Michelle Steiger and Steph Helmus completed the Dordt scoring five with times of 20:04 and 20:05 for 23rd and 24th respectively.
Eric Tudor was the second Dordt male across the finish line with a time of 27:49 and Josiah Luttjeboer, Jathan Robinson and Mark Eekhoff were 25th, 26th and 27th at 27:50, 27:52 and 28:05. Tudor was 23rd for Dordt.
Dordt has a full two weeks off before traveling to Briar Cliff in Sioux City on October 11.
