(Yankton, South Dakota) The Dordt College Defenders' Jen Kempers earned her second straight individual first place finish and helped the Defender women to a fourth place finish in the Mount Marty Invite at Yankton, South Dakota on Saturday, October 13. The Defender men placed twelfth in their final tuneup before the Great Plains Athletic Conference championship in two weeks.
Kempers outdualed Northwestern's Charity Miles in the final 400 meters, coming from behind to win by a nose with a final official time of 18:15.59 while Miles' time was 18:15.60. Tami Weiringa was 18th for Dordt with a time of 19:29 and Steph Helmus was 35th in 20:18. Dordt's next women's runner was Sara Hanenburg with a time of 21:39 in 78th place and Marne De Bruin was Dordt's final counter with a time of 21:53 and 83rd place.
146 runners competed in the women's race with Black Hills State nipping Concordia (Nebraska) 59-61 for the team championship. The course was a 5,000 meter event.
The Dordt men were twelfth with a total of 302 points. Joel De Haan was the top finisher for the Defenders with a time of 26:21 and 16th place. Devin Van't Hof was 61st in 27:49 and Mark Eekhoff had a time of 28:04 which was good for 74th. Drew Hoekema came in 107th in 28:47 and David Christensen was 113th with a time of 28:53 for Dordt's final counter.
162 men's runners completed the 8,000 meter course. Dickinson State claimed the men's title with 54 points and Concordia was second with 60.
The Dordt teams now prepare for the Great Plains Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday, October 27 in Crete, Nebraska.
