(Sioux Falls, South Dakota) The Dordt College cross country teams ran at the NAIA Region III championships at Prairie Green Golf Course in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on Saturday. The women's team finished seventh led by Jen Kempers while the men placed 13th in the event with schools out of the Dakota Athletic Conference and Great Plains Athletic Conference making up the field.
Black Hills State, a perenial power, ran away with a sweep, scoring just 48 points in the women's race, 36 points better than Concordia. Dordt College totaled 175 points and were ten points out of sixth place. The men's race was a bit tighter with Black Hills State scoring 60 and second place Doane finishing with 80. The Defenders totaled 330 points and were 33 points out of 12th place.
Kempers qualifies for the NAIA national meet on November 18 at Louisville, Kentucky with a sixth place time of 18:38. Chelsea Gerdes, a national qualifier in 2005, finished 17th in a time of 19:01 while Tami Wieringa was 25th in a time of 19:18. The women's race was a 5,000 meter course and the places listed for Dordt are overall places, not scoring places. The women's race featured 14 teams and 128 runners.
Joel De Haan was Dordt's top finisher with a time of 26:09 over the 8,000 meter course. Mark Eekhoff and Devin Van't Hof were 73rd and 77th respectively in times of 27:35 and 27:38. Seventeen men's teams ran in the race with 148 runners making up the field.
Contrary to earlier information, the top-five runners from schools that do not qualify for the National Meet will receive berths to the Championship meet. The regional champions will receive automatic berths to the national championships while an allotment of 15 at-large berths will be awarded early next week after the NAIA national cross country rankings are released.
