Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Doane

(Crete, Nebraska) The Dordt College Defender women’s basketball team lost a 67-62 decision to the Doane Tigers in Great Plains Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon in Crete, Nebraska. The Defenders suffered a two minute drought in the second half that forced the Defenders to mount a comeback that fell short.

Dordt led 22-21 at halftime after falling behind 16-2 to start the game. Dordt started its comeback with 11:34 left in the first half on a three-point bucket by Jasmin Schelhaas and Dordt took its first lead on a Danelle Boone three-pointer with 7:27 left in the half.

Dordt led by as many as three on three different occasions in the second half. A Mycah Hulst bucket with 8:51 left in the game made it 41-39. After a tie at 41-41 the Defenders fought to a 44-43 lead on a Schelhas jumper. Doane came down and converted a three-point basket at the 6:26 mark and they proceeded to go on a 12-0 run over that spanned 2:19 on the clock.

From that point the Defenders were fighting from behind, trailing 55-44 with 4:07 left in the game. Dordt cut the lead to 65-62 on a Jaimie Kok three-point bucket with ten seconds left. Doane converted converted both free throws on ensuing possession to make the final 67-62.

Dordt was 22-54 from the field and 6-22 on three-point attempts. Doane was 23-59 and converted 17-29 free throws. Dordt was outrebounded 47-29 and both teams committed 19 turnovers.

Kara Van Dyke had 19 points and seven rebounds. Schelhaas added 13 and Boone scored nine. Doane was paced by Shelbi Bittinger with 20 points and Heather Broman had 12.

With the win the Tigers slide past Dordt for the eighth spot in the conference as Doane moves to 3-8 in the GPAC and 9-10 overall while the Defenders fall to 3-9 in conference play and 9-11 on the year.
