Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Morningside

(Sioux City, Iowa) The Dordt College women were on the losing end of a lopsided GPAC contest this evening, falling 89-61 to the 9th ranked Morningside Mustangs. The Defenders fall to 8-9 overall and 2-7 in the conference with the loss while the Mustangs improve to 14-4 on the season and 5-3 in GPAC play.

After tallying the first three points of the contest the Defenders were outscored 15-4 and found themselves trailing by eight (15-7) six minutes into the game and lagged behind by as many as ten on two separate occasions in the first half. An Emily Neuman layup late in the half had the Defenders down by just six (39-33) but MaKayla Augustine hit a late three pointer for the Mustangs to give Morningside a 42-33 advantage at halftime.

The Mustangs stormed out of the locker room, outscoring Dordt 14-3 to start the half, opening up a 20 point lead (56-36) with 17:24 to play. The Defenders briefly trimmed the gap down to the teens but the Mustangs enjoyed a 25 point cushion for the majority of the half, securing their 14th win of the season.

Kayla Broekhuis knocked in 17 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead the Defender women, Broekhuis hit six of twelve from the floor, including five of nine from three point range. Danelle Boone added 11 points on three of nine from three point range and two of two from the line. Robyn Blount also grabbed seven boards for the Defenders while Jasmin Schelhaas and Kara Van Dyke each had three assists.

Lexi Ackerman paced the Mustangs with a game high 20 points (6 of 9 from the floor, 3 of 4 from three point range and 5 of 5 from the line) while Leann Osten added 19 (8 of 10 from the field with 3 of 4 from beyond the arc) and MaKayla Augustine and Jessica Tietz each had a dozen. Ashlynn Muhl snared nine boards and Jordyn Wollenburg pulled down eight.

The Mustangs shot 53% on the night, hitting 33 of their 62 attempts with 10 of 23 (43%) coming from beyond the arc and Morningside shot 68% from the charity stripe on 13 of 19 tries.

The Defenders struggled from the field, shooting 36% on 20 of 56 attempts with 10 of 30 (30%) from three point range and 11 of 13 (85%) on threes.

The Defenders were narrowly outrebounded 38-34 but were guilty of committing 25 turnovers while the Mustangs lost the ball 18 times.

The Defenders will host Nebraska Wesleyan University on Saturday, January 11 with tip-off against the Prairiewolves scheduled for 2:00 pm in the De Witt Gymnasium in Sioux Center, Iowa.
