Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Westmont-Westmont Classic

(Santa Barbara, California) The Dordt College Defender womenís basketball team lost a 73-59 decision to Westmont (California) in Santa Barbara, California on Tuesday night, December 31. The Defenders battled but lost ground in the second half before losing its seventh decision of the season.

Dordt led briefly in the first half when the Defenders battled back from a 12-5 deficit to take a 14-12 lead with 8:57 left on a Kayla Broekhuis basket. The Defenders would get up by as many as three on two different occasions, the last at 19-16 after Kara Van Dyke hit a bucket off an assist by Broekhuis with 6:57 left in the half. From that point to the end of the half, the Defenders were outscored 13-6 and went to the break down 29-25.

Dordt tied the game at 30-30 with 18:42 left in the game but the Warriors pushed out to a 38-32 lead. The Defenders cut the gap to 47-45 with 12:49 left on a pair of Danelle Boone free throws but the Warriors were carried by their post player, Kelsie Sampson, down the stretch and extended the lead to as many as 16 before the final margin of 73-59.

Dordt was led by Broekhuis with 21 points on 6-6 shooting from the field and 6-7 free throws. Broekhuis also had four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Kara Van Dyke, hampered by foul trouble most of the game, added 11 points and had eight rebounds with two steals. Mycah Hulst knocked down 10 points and had nine rebounds with four blocked shots. Emily Neuman added six points for the Defenders.

Westmont was paced by Sampsonís 35 points and nine rebounds and Erin Beadle had 13 rebounds with seven points and five assists.

Dordt was 21-53 from the field and 12-18 on free throws and converted 5-11 three-point shots. Westmont was 26-67 from the floor and the Warriors were limited to 2-16 from the three-point line. Dordt had 17 turnovers and Westmont 12. Dordt was outrebounded 48-35.

Dordt is 8-7 and will resume GPAC play on Saturday, January 4 when they host Concordia. Westmont improves to 8-3.
