(Santa Barbara, California) The Dordt College women’s basketball team overcame a 13 point first half deficit to secure a ten point win, 71-61, over San Diego Christian in a game played at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California on Monday, December 30.

The Defenders, shorthanded because of injuries to regular Elise Maresh and Jaimie Kok, started a lineup consisting of four players who had started at point guard for the Defenders at one time during their careers and Kara Van Dyke.

The lineup didn’t pay early dividends though as the Defenders fell behind 22-9 with 11:54 left in the first first half. After a Dordt College timeout the Defenders responded with three straight three-point baskets, one by Kim Kroeze and two by Abby Chapman. A Jessica Jelsema jumper cut the gap to 22-20 and the Defenders managed to get to the half down 32-29.

The Defenders tied it immediately after the halftime break with a Danelle Boone three-point basket and Kayla Broekhuis hit a three-point basket for Dordt’s first lead since a 3-2 advantage at 35-32. The Hawks got a three-pointer to tie it but Kara Van Dyke gave Dordt a lead they never relinquished. An 8-0 run put the Defenders up 49-40 and San Diego Christian never got closer than four the rest of the game.

Dordt converted 25-51 shots and 10-19 three-point baskets while limiting the Golden State Athletic Conference member to21-63 field goal shooting and 11-29 three-point accuracy. Dordt was outrebounded by a slight 36-35 difference after getting hurt on the boards for a nine rebound deficit in the first half.
