Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Martin Luther

(New Ulm, Minnesota) The Dordt College Defender women’s basketball team withstood a late run by Martin Luther in non-conference basketball on Thursday night, December 19 in New Ulm, Minnesota. Dordt led by as many as 27 points in the second half before securing a 69-61 win.
Dordt got up 20-16 on a pair of Kim Kroeze free throws with 9:54 left in the first half but then went cold from the floor, going nearly four minutes without a point before a Kayla Broekhuis three-point basket pushed the lead from 20-19 to 23-19. The Defenders proceeded to outscore the hosts 14-4 to take a 34-23 halftime lead.
The strong play continued with Dordt pushing out to a 60-33 lead on a pair of Emily Neuman free throws with 8:48 left in the game. From that point on Martin Luther would chip away at the lead, making the game’s final minute interesting.
The hosts outscored Dordt 25-7 lead to cut the gap to nine with 1:58 left in the game. The Defenders were able to withstand the run as Martin Luther got no closer than six and Dordt won the game 69-61.
Elise Maresh had 18 points to lead the Defenders and converted 9-14 field goals. Jasmin Schelhaas scored 13 and was 10-10 from the free throw line. Kayla Broekhuis had nine points and Kara Van Dyke scored eight with ten rebounds and she had four blocked shots.
Dordt was 22-51 from the floor and 19-27 on free throws and they held a 46-37 rebounding advantage. Martin Luther was 21-67 from the field and forced Dordt into 27 turnovers.
The Knights were led by Hannah Hackbarth with 19 points and Leah Nass scored 12 with nine rebounds.
Dordt is 7-6 overall and will next play December 30 and 31 against Westmont and San Diego Christian. Martin Luther is 3-7.
