December 4, 2013
(Sioux Center, Iowa) The 15th ranked visiting Briar Cliff Chargers would need overtime to topple the Dordt College women 100-92 in GPAC play this evening. The Defenders move to 6-2 overall and 2-2 in conference play while the Chargers improve to 8-2 on the year and 4-2 in the GPAC.
A 9-2 Dordt College run to start the game, topped off by a Danelle Boone three pointer, had the Defenders jumping out to an early seven point lead and the Defenders continued to enjoy the seven point cushion (24-17) with 8:29 to play in the first half. A Jasmin Schelhaas three pointer at 5:56 had the Defenders out in front by 16 (37-21) but the Chargers outscored Dordt 19-6 over the final six minutes to go in to the locker room trailing the Defenders by three (43-40).
The second half began similarly to how the first half ended, with the Chargers dominating play. A Masters Slone layup a 12:34 put the Chargers up by 13 (60-47) as the visitors would outscore Dordt 20 to 4 in the opening seven and half minutes of the second half. In what would turn out to be a game of runs to that point, the Defenders answered with a 17-3 rally of their own to go up by a point (64-63)on a Danelle Boone layup with 9:27 to play. The final nine minutes of action featured six lead changes and six ties, including the 83-83 regulation final. The Defenders led 83-80 with 52 seconds to play but a jumper by Kaylee Blake with 40 seconds to play, cut the Dordt advantage down to one. Blake had a chance to win the game with one second to play as she was sent to the free-throw line to shoot a two but only managed to knock in one. Dordt received the ball with 1.3 seconds to play and threw away the inbounds pass but the Chargers could not convert, sending the game to the extra session.
Foul trouble would haunt the Defenders as senior forward Kara Van Dyke fouled out at the very end of regulation and Jamie Kok picked up her fifth just 35 seconds in to overtime while Elise Maresh would bow out with 1:40 to play. The two teams were knotted at 85-85, 87-87 and 89-89 but six straight points by Briar Cliff put the Chargers on top 95-89 with 48 seconds and eventually fell 100-92.
Coach Craig Stiemsma: "It was great to see us battle back from a double digit deficit and force overtime but it was really tough for us in the overtime with so many of our senior leaders on the bench. Briar Cliff attacked us well and shot well from the free-throw line so you need to give them some credit." The Chargers hit 37-45 from the charity stripe for 82.2%.
Dordt's Kara Van Dyke led all scorers with 23 as the senior forward hit nine of thirteen from the floor, including two of three from three point range and three of three from the line. Elise Maresh finished with 22 points on six of twelve from the field and ten of twelve from the line. Danelle Boone (13), Jasmin Schelhaas (12) and Jamie Kok (11) rounded out the double digit scorers for the Defenders. Jamie Kok pulled down a team high eight boards while Van Dyke snared seven and Jessica Jelsema grabbed six.
Slone Masters led all scorers with 27 points for the Chargers, knocking down six of eleven from the field, hitting one of four from three point range and an impressive 14 of 15 from the free-throw line while also pulling down nine boards. Regan Cooper ended with 18 points and 11 boards to pick up the double double. Morgan Hanson and Kaylee Blake both had a dozen points while Lexi Henschke finished with ten.
Briar Cliff had a seven point advantage in rebounding, grabbing 47 while the Defenders pulled down 40. Dordt College had 20 turnovers on the night and the Chargers gave up the ball on 19 occasions.
