Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. AIB

(Des Moines, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender women’s basketball team overcame a ten-point second half deficit to defeat AIB in Des Moines, Iowa on Tuesday night in non-conference play. The Defenders outscored the hosts 60-46 in the second half for the 89-84 win.
The Defenders’ only lead in the first half was at 2-0 and AIB took control from there, forcing Dordt to come from behind the rest of the half. Dordt tied it at 13-13 with 10:39 left on an Elise Maresh field goal. AIB proceeded to score the next eight points to lead 21-13. The Defenders never got closer than five the rest of the half and trailed 38-29 at halftime.
A bucket by the Eagles put them up 40-29 to start the second half but the Defenders chipped away and got to within 48-46 with 13:54 left after Mycah Hulst made a basket. The Eagle withstood the Dordt challenge and pushed the lead back to 10 at 60-50 with ten minutes left in the game. Two baskets by Jaimie Kok and a pair of hoops by Robyn Blount cut the lead to 60-58 and the Dordt comeback had begun.
Dordt’s first second half lead came on an Elise Maresh basket at 64-63 with 6:09 left and the two teams traded buckets with Dordt extending the lead with a three-point basket by Jasmin Schelhaas and a two-point shot by Maresh to make it 73-69.
AIB got no closer than two the rest of the game with Maresh salting it away with two free throws with eight seconds left for the final of 89-84.
Maresh had a career high 31 points on 8-10 field goal shooting and 15-16 free throw shooting. Kara Van Dyke had 15 points and ten rebounds before fouling out and Danelle Boone had 13. Jasmin Schelhaas scored seven and Jaimie Kok had 11 rebounds.
Dordt had a 52-37 rebounding advantage and converted 27-66 field goals with 31-35 free throws. AIB was 27-68 from the field and 26-36 on free throws. Dordt did not make a three-point shot in the first half on 12 shots but converted 4-11 in the second half.
AIB got 23 points by Megan Howard and 17 by Johnikka Nash. Christen Jones added 14 and had team honors in rebounds with Howard with seven.
Dordt is now 4-1 overall and AIB falls to 3-2. Dordt will face Midland on Saturday in the GPAC opener for both teams.
