Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. York

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender women’s basketball team opened the 2013-14 season with an 80-50 win over the York Panthers (Nebraska) in Sioux Center, Iowa, Friday night, October 25.
The Defenders trailed 7-5 with 16:58 left in the first half before a 16-0 run blew the game open. The run included back to back baskets by Robyn Blount and two three-point buckets by Danelle Boone. By the time the half was over the Defenders had built as much as a 42-16 lead late in the half on an Abby Chapman free throw. Dordt had a 42-18 halftime lead.
York opened the second half with six unanswered points but the Defenders went on another 11 point run to push the lead to 53-24. An Elise Maresh baket with 11:59 made it 58-27. The lead was never less than 24 the rest of the game and the Defenders finished with the 80-50 win, outscoring York 38-32 in the second half.
Dordt was 26-71 from the floor for 36.6 percent success. Dordt also converted 8-24 on three-point attempts and was 20-24 from the free throw line. Dordt outrebounded York 47-46 and forced 34 turnovers while Dordt had 21.
Elise Maresh had a game high 15 points while Kara Van Dyke and Danelle Boone each had 12 points. Abby Chapman came off the bench to score nine points while Kim Kroeze, Jaimie Kok and Mycah Hulst all had eight. Van Dyke and Hulst each had ten rebounds and Maresh had six boards. Kok dished out four assists and Emily Neuman had four steals.
York was limited to 16-60 shooting for 26.7 percent and they converted 3-21 three-point tries. Marisa Maher had 11 points and Cory Minjarez and Doreen Lopez had ten points each.
Dordt is 1-0 and will face Valley City State on November 1 and Jamestown on November 2 in its next action. York falls to 0-1.
