Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Martin Luther

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College women’s basketball team withstood a late first half run by the Martin Luther Knights in non-conference basketball to win a 62-42 women’s basketball game on Monday night in Sioux Center.
The Defenders jumped on top early with a seven point run that put them ahead after Martin Luther had scored the first bucket of the game. Dordt eventually took a 22-7 lead on a three-point shot by Danelle Boone with 10:09 left in the half and was still up 24-9 with 6:59 left in the half.
Martin Luther scored 16 of the next 20 points to cut the difference to 28-25 at the halftime break.
A nine point run by the Defenders from the 16:44 mark of the second half to the 11:47 mark put them back up by 17 and Martin Luther got no closer than 13 the rest of the game.
Dordt was led by Elise Maresh with 15 points on 6-11 shooting and she had three rebounds and two blocked shots. Jasmin Schelhaas scored 11 and was 3-8 on three-point shots. Kayla Broekhuis had nine points, seven rebounds, three assists and five steals and Danelle Boone was 3-5 on three-point shots for nine points and had two steals. Kara Van Dyke led the Defenders with 11 rebounds and she had five steals and six points. Brianna Spronk also had five steals with six points and three assists.
Martin Luther was paced by Alex Anthon with 12 points and Rebecca Engelbrecht had 11 with nine rebounds.
Dordt converted 22-59 field goals for 37.3 percent while Martin Luther was 15-56 from the floor for 26.8 percent and Dordt held a 46-41 rebounding advantage. Both teams had struggles with turnovers with Martin Luther committing 33 and Dordt 28.
Dordt is 7-7 heading into a pair of games this week in GPAC play. The Defenders face Morningside on Wednesday night in Sioux City and will host Briar Cliff on Saturday.
