Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Concordia

(Seward, Nebraska) The Dordt College Defender women went to the locker room with a one point lead but Concordia took control of the game in the second half and ran away with an 87-64 GPAC victory. The Defenders fall to 9-10 in the conference and 15-14 overall with the loss while the Bulldogs improve to 14-4 in the GPAC and 23-4 on the year.
Neither team was able to open up much of a lead in the first half and the teams were knotted at nine, ten, seventeen and nineteen and a Kristen Conahan three pointer gave the Bulldogs a 24-22 advantage with 5:17 to play. A 9-1 run by Dordt College capped by a Jasmin Schelhaas three point basket at 2:08 gave the Defenders a 31-25 lead but a 6-0 run by Concordia tied the game at 31-31. A made free throw by Kayla Broekhuis in the final minute of the half gave the Defenders a 32-31 lead at the break.
Concordia went on a 14-2 run over the first five minutes of the second half to take an 11 point advantage (45-34) at 15:36. The Defenders were able to get within nine points on three separate occasions and trailed 52-43 after a Jasmin Schelhaas three pointer but were outscored 14-1 over the next three and half-minutes and trailed 66-44 with nine minutes to play and would get no closer than 20 over the closing minutes of the contest.
Elise Maresh paced the Defender women with 15 points on six of twelve from the floor and three of six from the charity stripe while also ripping down seven rebounds. Jamie Kok dropped in 11 points, hitting two of six from the field and six of eleven from the line and the junior forward also grabbed six boards and dished out three assists. Jasmis Schelhaas added eight points with the freshman guard going two for two from three point range and two for two from the charity stripe. Kayla Broekhuis had a game high 11 rebounds to go along with seven points and four assists.
Katie Rich led all scorers with 17 points for the Bulldogs on seven of ten from the floor with one of three from beyond the arc and two of two from the line while also snaring five boards. Kristen Conahan added 15 points on a perfect five of five from the floor with four for four from three point range and one of one from the line and Conahan also grabbed four steals. Bailey Morris had eleven points on three of seventeen from the field with one of five from three point range and four of seven from the line. Katie Rich and Jericca Pearson both grabbed five boards for the Bulldogs who were outrebounded 41-33 by the Defender women.
Dordt College finished with a minus 17 in the turnover department as the Defenders coughed the ball up 28 times while the Bulldogs committed only eleven. "We simply had way too many turnovers," added Dordt Head Coach Craig Stiemsma, "we didn't handle their press very well and that gave them some easy baskets."
