February 2, 2013
(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Defender women used a 23-6 outburst at the start of the second half to turn a seven point deficit into a ten point advantage and went on to beat the visiting Hasting Broncos 73-66 in GPAC play this afternoon. Dordt College snaps a three game losing streak with the victory and improve to 14-13 on the year and 8-9 in the conference while the Broncos fall to 13-13 this year and 8-8 in GPAC action.
Dordt College got off to a strong start, scoring the first nine points of the game to take a 9-0 lead on a Spronk layup at 15:14. A 5-0 run by the Broncos made it a four point contest and the Defenders continued to lead by four (18-14)after another Spronk layup at 7:23. The Broncos used an 8-2 run to take their first lead of the contest, 22-20 at 5:14 and the teams were knotted at 24-24 with 1:37 to play in the half. The Broncos finished the half with a pair of three pointers from Bruckman and Wong, along with a made free throw to go into the locker room leading 31-24.
Dordt's Kara Van Dyke had the first five points of the second half via a pair of free throws and a three pointer to get the Defenders within two, trailing 31-29. A jumper and a set of free throws pushed the Bronco lead back to six (35-29)at 17:03 but the Defenders answered with a 12-0 run to go up 41-25 with 12:46 to play in the second half and pushed their advantage to 47-37 on an old fashioned three point play by Jamie Kok at 11:14.
Laurel Zwiener almost single-handedly kept the Broncos in range as the 6'4" post player had 15 points for Hastings over an eight minute stretch but could get her team no closer than four and the Defenders hit enough free throws (9-12) over the final 78 seconds to secure the GPAC win.
Kayla Broekhuis picked up a double double for the Defenders, finishing with 19 points and 10 rebounds, hitting five of seven from the field with three of four from three point range and six of seven from the free throw line. Brianna Spronk and Jamie Kok both added 14 points with Spronk knocking in six of twelve from the field and two of four from the line while Kok hit four of six from the floor with one made three pointer and was a perfect five of five from the charity stripe. Spronk also pulled down eight boards and dished out a game high five assists. Kara Van Dyke contributed 12 points, converting four of fourteen from the field with two of seven from beyond the arc and two of four from the line while also snaring seven boards.
Laurel Zwiener led all scorers with 22 points for the Broncos with 20 of those coming in the second half. Zwiener was nine of fourteen from the field and four of six from the free throw line and grabbed six rebounds. Cami Bruckman had 16 points in the first half and was held to four points in the second for a total of 20 points on six of ten from the field with four of six on threes. Brittney Wong hit four of twelve from the floor with two of six from three point range and two of two from the line for 12 points.
Dordt College outrebounded the Broncos 37-31 and the Defenders committed 13 turnovers while Hastings had 11.
"Our ladies worked really hard to get good defensive stops over the first four minutes of the second half and the momentum we generated during that period carried through the entire half," said Dordt College Head Coach Craig Stiemsma. "You have to give a lot of credit to our women for their defense and the patience that they showed in the second half also. We did a great job moving the ball and that was huge for us. Offensively we were very proficient. We are pretty good offensive team when we don't turn over the basketall."
