Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Midland

January 12, 2013

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender women dropped a 76-65 result to the Midland Warriors in GPAC play this afternoon (January 12, 2013)to fall to 5-6 in the conference and 11-10 overall while Midland improves to 8-12 and 2-8 in GPAC play.

After scoring the first two points of the game on free throws, the Defender lead disappeared on a Thramer basket followed by a Joelle Anderson to put the Warriors up 5-2 at the 17:20 mark. Dordt College stayed close as the Warriors were unable to pull away by more than four until Jamilah Johnson hit a three pointer at the halfway mark of the first to put Midland up 15-10. An 8-0 run by the Defenders that included three pointers from Boone and Broekhuis found Dordt College up 18-15. The two teams were knotted at 18, 20, 25, 30 and 32 before Midland hit a free throw to end the first half of play 33-32.

The second half started a lot like the first half with neither team being able to create any distance on the scoreboard and the teams were tied at 41 and again at 43 with 15:32 to play. A Kayla Broekhuis three point basket at 12:31 gave the Defenders their biggest lead of the game at five(50-45)but the Warriors quickly tied the game with a Shepard jumper and an Anderson three pointer. A Jamie Kok layup tied the game for the thirteenth time at 55-55 with eight minutes to play. A Kellie Page three pointer for Midland broke the tie but the Defenders responded with a pair of Van Dyke free throws (her first points of the contest) and a Kayla Broekhuis jumper to regain the lead 59-58. Seven straight Warrior points found the Warriors up by six, 65-59. Dordt would cut it down to a three point game with a Spronk old-fashioned three point basket but the visitors tallied the next six points to go up 71-62 with 1:24 to play and the Defenders could get no closer than eight over the final 80 seconds, falling 76-65.

Leading the Defenders in scoring was Elise Maresh who finished the afternoon with 19 points on seven of thirteen from the floor and five of six from the free throw line. Briana Spronk picked up 17 points making seven of fourteen attempts from the floor and three of four from the charity stripe while Jamie Kok added ten on four of ten from the field and one of two from the line. Kara Van Dyke grabbed a team high six boards with just two points in limited action due to foul trouble.

The Warriors' Joelle Anderson matched Maresh with 19 points on five of twelve from the floor and a perfect seven of seven from the line while also grabbing nine boards. Jamilah Johnson had 16 points on five of nine from the floor, with one made three pointer, and five of five from the line. Taylor Shepard had a dozen and Jami Thramer picked up the double double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Most statistics on the game were very even but the Warriors dominated the boards (pulling down 44 caroms while the Defenders yanked down 28) and the free throw line, as Midland made 22 of 28 from the charity stripe while Dordt was 11 of 17. The Warriors picked up 20 turnovers as the Defenders lost the ball 18 times and Dordt had 12 assisted field goals to 9 for the visitors.
