Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Midland (NE)

(Fremont, Nebraska) The Dordt College women's basketball evened its record in the Great Plains Athletic Conference with a 70-63 win over the Midland Warriors on Saturday afternoon in Fremont, Nebraska.
Dordt never trailed after tying the game at 4-4 with 15:15 left in the first half on a Kayla Broekhuis bucket. Midland did tie it twice at 21-21 and 25-25 but the Defenders outscored the Warriors 11-6 over the final 5:08 of the first half for a 36-31 halftime lead.
Dordt got back to back buckets by Kara Van Dyke and Emily Neuman to forge a 50-41 lead early in the second half but the Warriors would go quietly. Down 40-31, the hosts fought back to within 45-44 at the 12:49 mark. Dordt answered the challenge with five straight points on a free throw and basket by Brianna Spronk and bucket by Mycah Hulst. Midland got no closer than 55-53 the rest of the way with Dordt converting 17-26 free throws in the second half to preserve the win 70-63.
Dordt made 25-40 free throws and 21-52 field goals for 40.4 percent. Midland was 25-59 from the field and 10-22 on free throws. Dordt was outrebounded 43-36 but forced 26 turnovers--11 by steal while committing 19 turnover of its own.
Dordt was led by Brianna Spronk with 25 points and she set a pair of records with a 15-21 night from the free throw line. The 21 free throws attemped broke a record established by Faye Woudstra in 1984 and the 15 made free throws broke a record that stood since 1976 held by Mary De Waard. Mycah Hulst came off the bench to score 10 and grabbed nine rebounds. Spronk had eight rebounds, four assists and three steals. Jasmin Schelhaas added eight points.
Midland was topped by Joelle Anderson with 20 points and Danielle Stephan contributed 12. Taylor Shepard, a post player who led Midland with a 15 points per game average entering the game, was limited to five points before fouling out.
Dordt is now 5-6 overall and 2-2 in the GPAC while Midland is 3-6 overall and 0-4 in the league. Dordt will face Northwestern in Sioux Center on Wednesday night, December 5.
