Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Doane

(Crete, Nebraska) The Dordt College Defenders led from wire to wire as they start off their GPAC season with a 55-46 win over the Doane Tigers this afternoon (November 17).
The Defender women used an 11-0 run to go from up 5-4 to lead 16-4 in the first half and took a 31-16 lead into the lockerroom. Dordt capped the run with a Kayla Broekhuis three-pointer and free throw after she was fouled on the wing jumper. Doane went over six minutes without scoring during the run.
The second half had Dordt holding a double digit lead most of the way and they were up 51-40 with a little over five minutes remaining when Doane mounted a final push. Five straight points narrowed the gap to six with 3:37 left but a pair of Elise Maresh free throws re-established order and the Defenders surrendered just one point in the final three minutes to win the GPAC opener for both teams 55-46.
Dordt overcame a 25 turnover night by outrebounding the hosts 41-31. Elise Maresh was 8-10 at the free throw line and scored 12 points and she grabbed six rebounds. Jaimie Kok and Kayla Broekhuis each scored ten points with Broekhuis hitting three, three-point baskets.
Brianna Spronk had nine points and 11 rebounds with five steals.
Doane was topped by Brittany Luettel with 12 points.
Both teams struggled from the floor with Dordt hitting 18-49 field goals for 37 percent and the hosts had 16-52 success for 31 percent.
The Defenders are 3-4 overall and 1-0 in the GPAC while Doane drops its first decision and are 5-1 and 0-1. Dordt will host Mount Marty on Tuesday while Doane faces Briar Cliff. Dordt College will play host to Mount Marty in a Great Plains Athletics Conference game on Tuesday, November 20 at 6:00 pm in the DeWitt Gymnasium.
