Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Valley City State (ND)

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender women's basketball team couldn't maintain a second half lead and lost a 71-63 decision to Valley City State on Saturday afternoon in Sioux Center. The Defender women led most of the first half, leading by as many as seven with under a minute to go in the half and they took a five point lead into the intermission at 34-29.
Six of the first eight points were scored by Valley City State and the Defenders were clinging to a one point led at 36-35. From there the Defenders steadily built the lead and got up 53-42 with 9:10 left in the game on a Jessica Jelsema three-pointer.
The visitors outscored Dordt over the next six minutes 19-7 for a one point lead and they never trailed again in winning the 71-63 decision.
Dordt was 24-56 from the floor for 42.9 percent and 9-22 on three-point shots. Dordt was hampered by 28 turnovers but managed to outrebound the Vikings 31-28. Kara Van Dyke scored 17 while Brianna Spronk and Elise Maresh had ten each with Maresh taking down 12 rebounds. Van Dyke had five assists and Maresh had four with three steals.
Brittany Lehner led all scorers with 20 points and Katelyn Ralston added 13 with five rebounds and had three steals. The Vikings were 26-50 from the floor and 16-24 on free throws.
Dordt slips to 0-2 overall and Valley City State is 1-1. Dordt will host Grand View (Iowa) on Tuesday afternoon, November 6 at 3:30 pm.
