(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt JV women’s season got off to a rough start Monday night as they fell to winless Briar Cliff 92-72.
In a game that was sloppy all around, the Defenders struggled mightily to take care of the basketball, giving away 33 turnovers, 26 of which were due to Briar Cliff steals.
A 5-point halftime deficit quickly ballooned into a 20+ point lead between the careless play and foul trouble. Two starters fouled out, Molly Van Rijn and Jo Ellen Kalsbeek, and the Chargers took full advantage of their free-throw opportunities, making 30 of 33 for the game.
The Defenders only led once at 3-0. Briar Cliff then went on a 10-0 run to take an early edge. Dordt actually battled back to tie the score at 14, but could not ever regain the lead. The score was 34-29 in favor of Briar Cliff at halftime.
A bright spot on the night for Dordt was Caroline Reinders who sent in 22 points, including a trio of 3-pointers. Braunschweig, 12, and Wybenga, 11, also entered double figures. Forward Kacy Oberfoell led the way with 10 rebounds.
Briar Cliff had 13 players score on the game. Their top three point-getters were Kortney Classen, 15, Kaitlin Meister, 13, and Jordan Sanger, 11.
Dordt, now 0-1, takes the court again on Tuesday as they travel to Worthington, Minnesota to face Minnesota West. Their next home game is Monday, November 21st, against Buena Vista.
Briar Cliff, 1-4, plays next on Thursday against Northwestern.
