January 28, 2012
(Sioux Center, Iowa) A great defensive effort helped propel the Dordt College women's basketball team to a commanding 81-57 victory over the #2 ranked Briar Cliff Chargers in GPAC basketball play this afternoon (Saturday, January 28). With the win the Defender women improve to 10-13 overall and 5-10 in conference play while the Chargers drop to 19-5 on the season and 10-4 in GPAC play. The 57 points for the Chargers was their lowest offensive output on the season.
Dordt College found themselves trailing by 2 (10-8) with 13:36 left in the first half when a 9-0 run, which began with 5 straight points from Elise Maresh, pushed Dordt out to a 17-10 lead with 10:43 remaining. The Defenders held a 20-16 advantage with 6:31 to play when a 13-1 Dordt run capped by a Bailey Spencer jumper gave Dordt a 16 point lead (33-17)with 2 minutes to play in the half and a Kayla Broekhuis 3 pointer allowed the Defenders to take a 36-22 lead into the break.
The Chargers opened up the second half by scoring the first 4 points to cut the Defender lead to 10 (36-26) but could never cut the Dordt advantage to single digits for the duration of the contest. A Jamie Kok jumper with 13:54 to go made it 50-32 and gave Dordt their biggest lead of the night to that point at 18. A 7-0 run by Briar Cliff cut it to 50-39 with 11:50 to play but a dominating 20-4 response by the Defender women put the game out of reach with Dordt up 27 points at 70-43 with 4 minutes remaining. Briar Cliff would get no closer than 18 over the final 4 minutes of play and the Defender women grabbed an important conference victory.
"That was a great defensive effort from everybody that played for us this afternoon," remarked Dordt Head Coach Craig Stiemsma. "Our goal was to hold them to less than 35 points per half and it was nice to see us achieve that. We knew they would make a run and we told our players to just relax, have fun and keep attacking the basket. We made some mistakes but we are willing to take the bad with the good when we win like that."
Dordt's Elise Maresh led all scorers with 15 points and a perfect 6 of 6 from the floor and 3 of 5 from the charity stripe. The Defender women had a balanced attack as Maresh was one of 6 Dordt players to score in double figures. Kayla Broekhuis finished with 12 on 3 of 6 from the floor including 2 of 3 from three point range; Broekhuis also grabbed 5 boards, had 2 assists and 2 steals.
