Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Nebraska Wesleyan

January 21, 2012

(Lincoln, Nebraska) A 21-0 run in the second half helped the Dordt College women's basketball team put the Nebraska Wesleyan Prairiewolves away early as the Defenders went on to take the GPAC tilt by a score of 78-49.

The Defenders took the lead for good early when Kayla Broekhuis hit a three for a 3-2 lead and the Defenders rolled to an 11-2 lead. The Defenders first double digit lead was at 16-5 and eventually reached 23 points with five minutes left in the first half. Dordt went into the lockerroom up 46-27.

Wesleyan tried to match the Defenders in the second half and outscored Dordt 6-3 to start the half and were down 49-33 at the 16:47 mark. Wesleyan wouldn't score again until the 7:30 mark when they were down 70-33. Dordt went on to win 78-49.

Dordt was 33-62 from the floor for 53.2 percent and had a 38-35 rebounding advantage while limiting the hosts to 17-54 shooting for 31.5 percent.

Brianna Spronk had 16 points on 7-11 shooting while Jessica Jelsema and Jaimie Kok had 12 and 10 each. Kara Van Dyke scored nine with five rebounds and Kayla Gesink had five rebounds, five assists and five points with two steals. Eleven players scored for the Defenders.

"This was as efficient as we have been this season on offense," said Dordt College coach Craig Stiemsma. "We've changed Briana's role. She wants to keep getting better at the game and 16 points with just one turnover is great."

Wesleyan got 13 by Mallory Shanahan and ten by Melissa Bennett. Shea Rasmussen, who went for 32 in the earlier meeting this season, was limited to six points on 3-8 shooting.

"To limit her to eight shots and six points is a credit to our defense and how we picked her up in different spots," said Stiemsma.

Dordt is 4-9 in the league and 9-12 overall while Nebraska Wesleyan falls to 2-11 and 5-13.
