Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Dakota State

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender womenís basketball snapped a three game losing streak with a 68-52 win over the Dakota State Lady Tís in non-conference basketball in Sioux Center on Wednesday, January 11. The Defenders were in control from the midpoint of the first half on and outscored Dakota State 36-26 in the second half for their seventh win this season.

Dakota State took an 11-7 lead at the 11:47 mark only to see Dordt tie it at 11-11 on a Jessica Jelsema bucket at the 11:08 point. Dordt continued the run and eventually got up 20-13 with Kara Van Dyke making a lay up with 7:07 left. The Defenders were able to withstand a Dakota State mini-run to end the half and led 32-26 after Kayla Broekhuis banged down a three-point shot with less than five seconds left in the half.

Dordt started the second half with back to back buckets by Van Dyke and Jaimie Kok and the Defenders were never ahead by less than eight until the 7:03 mark after Dakota State put together 9-0 run to cut the difference to 55-48. Dordt was still up by six at 56-50 at the 4:32 mark of the game but closed the game with a 12-2 run to win by a final of 68-52.

Dordt converted 26-62 shots for 41.9 percent and was 5-19 on three-pointers and they had a 37-35 rebounding advantage. The Lady Tís were 18-53 from the floor and 5-19 on three-point shots to go with 11-11 free throw shooting. Dordt committed 14 turnovers while Dakota State committed 22.

The Defenders were led by Kayla Gesink and Kara Van Dyke with 14 each and Gesink had a team high seven rebounds with four steals and two assists. Kayla Broekhuis had 10 points and five rebounds with three assists. Jaimie Kok scored six and had a game high seven assists while Brianna Spronk came off the bench for nine points and five rebounds with four steals.

Dakota State was led by Courtney Hamblin and Katy Pillar with 12 points each and Pillar had eight rebounds as well.

Dordt is now 7-11 and will play Midland on Saturday in Fremont. Dakota State slips to 5-11.
