Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Hastings
January 4, 2012
(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender women's basketball team dropped a 75-48 conference game against 8th ranked Hastings College this evening as the visitors quickly turned a 14 point half-time lead in to a 19 point advantage in taking the GPAC win. With the victory the Broncos improve to 13-4 overall and 5-3 in the GPAC while Dordt drops to 6-10 on the season and 2-7 in conference play.
After the Broncos scored the opening basket of the contest, the Defenders tied the game at 2-2 on a Brianna Spronk jump shot and that would be as close as Dordt would be for the duration of the contest. Hastings took a 7 point lead at 12-5 with 16:35 to go on a Statler layup. A 7-2 run by Dordt got the Defenders within 2 (14-12) with Kara Van Dyke nailing a 3 pointer at 14:28. Back to back 3 pointers by Hastings' Bruckman and Wong game the Broncos an 8 point cushion (20-12) with 12:57 to play and they took their first double digit lead of the game (23-13) on a McDermott 3 ball at 11:16.
The Defenders were able to cut into visitors' lead, cutting it down to 7 (27-20) on a Spronk jumper with 7:40 to play but the Broncos scored the next 7 to take a 14 point lead (34-20) with 5:08 to play and Hastings held a double digit lead for the rest of the half and took a 14 point lead into the break, up 42-28. Hastings shot 50% from the floor in the first half on 14 of 28 while Dordt was 10 of 33 for 30.3%.
The Defenders opened up the second half with a Kayla Broekhuis 3 point basket to get with 11 points, trailing 42-31 but Hastings went on a 8-0 run to grab a 19 point advantage on a Statler jumper with 16:33 to play. Boone knocked home a 3 point bucket for Dordt to get it back to 16 (50-34) but the Broncos answered right back with a 3 of their own to grab back a 19 point lead and the Broncos would hold no less than a 19 point cushion over the final 14 minutes in taking the 27 point win.
Dordt College was led in scoring by Jamie Kok's 11 points while Jessica Jelsema added 8, Elisa Maresh 7 and Brianna Spronk 6. Maresh and Spronk both pulled down 6 boards in helping the Defenders to a narrow 39-38 rebounding advantage with 16 of the Dordt rebounds coming on the offensive end.
Alicia Statler paced the Broncos with a double double, as she posted 20 points and grabbed 13 boards to go along with 5 blocked shots and 3 assists. Brittney Wong added 11 points for Hasting and Tanasia Uhring, Melissa Thompson and Courtney Spawn each added seven points.
Hastings finished the night shooting 48.3% from the floor on 28 of 58, with 6 of 15 from 3 point range for 40%. Dordt College shot 19 of 63 from the field for 30.2% with 3 of 14 from behind the arc for 21.4%. Hastings was 13-16 (81%) from the free throw line while the Defenders were 7 of 10 (70%). Dordt turned the ball over 19 times, with 11 of those coming in the second half while the Broncos turned the ball over 13 times.
"We worked hard defensively," said Dordt Head Coach Craig Stiemsma, "but a combination of good defense by Hastings and us not executing well on offense cost us scoring opportunities. They were more aggressive than us and deserve a lot of credit."
