Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Briar Cliff

January 2, 2012

(Sioux City, Iowa) A perfect 15 of 15 from the charity stripe in the first half helped the Defenders to a 40-40 tie after the first 20 minutes of action against Briar Cliff, before falling 95-74 to the #3 ranked Chargers. With the win Briar Cliff improves to 15-2 overall and 6-1 in conference play while Dordt College drops to 6-9 overall and 2-6 in the Great Plains Athletics Conference.

The Defenders led by as many as seven points in the first half with the seven point bulge coming at the six minute mark after Jaimie Kok made a lay up to push the difference to 32-25. Six unanswered points by the hosts cut the difference to 32-31. Dordt never relinquished the lead but did see Briar Cliff tie it at 38-38 and 40-40 late in the first half.

The game was still tied 44-44 early in the second half but the Chargers steadily pulled away, scoring eight points in a row over a four minute span to go from a 55-51 lead to a 63-51 advantage with just under ten minutes to go in the game. A pair of Kayla Broekhuis free throws made it 63-53 but back to back three-pointers around the 9:00 mark blew the game open for the Chargers and they never led by less than 14 the rest of the game.

Elise Maresh led the Defender women with 14 points, including 7 of 8 from the free throw line. Brianna Spronk added 11 points and grabbed 4 rebounds while Jessica Jelsema contributed 10 points and pulled down a game high 7 boards.

Sara Reeves posted a game high 17 points for the Chargers on 6 of 7 from the floor. Briar Cliff had four other players in double figures with Megan Salcedo adding 13 on 6 of 10 field goals while Mattie Murren and Summer Gordon had 12 each and Kelsey Evans contributed 11.

Dordt College held a slight edge in rebounding as they grabbed 35 caroms while the Chargers pulled down 34. The Defenders coughed the ball up 32 times on the night with Briar Cliff turning it over 20 times. Turnovers, plus 14 offensive boards for the Chargers, helped Briar Cliff launch 20 more field goal attempts than the Defenders as Dordt shot 23 of 51 (45.1%) while Briar Cliff finished the night shooting 50.7% on 36 of 71. From the free throw line the Defender women were 26 of 31 (83.9%) with the Chargers shooting 65.4% on 17 of 26.

"We really competed hard in the first half," said Dordt Head Coach Craig Stiemsma, "but Briar Cliff's transition game and offensive rebounding really hurt us as did all the turnovers. In the second half we took the ball in to some bad spots on the floor and turned it over. We did some good things against the zone and played well offensively in the first half."
