Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Morningside
December 14, 2011
(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College women's basketball team dropped a 66-46 contest this evening (December 14, 2011) to GPAC foe Morningside College. Morningside improves to 11-3 overall and 6-1 in the GPAC with the win while the Defenders fall to 4-8 overall and 2-5 in conference play.
Dordt and Morningside were tied four times in the opening 12 minutes of action with the final tie coming with exactly 8 minutes left in the half with the teams knotted at 15-15. Morningside scored the next 8 points to take a 23-15 lead on a Brittany Alfredson layup with 5:48 to play. A Danelle Boone 3 pointer with 1:34 to go in the half had Dordt trailing by just 4 points (27-23) but the Mustangs had the last 2 baskets of the half to take an 8 point lead (31-23) at the break.
A 15-2 run in the opening 5 minutes of the second half put the #5 ranked Mustangs up by 21 (46-25) and a 3 pointer by Morningside's Donell Betts at 13:43 put them up by 22. Back to back 3 pointers by Dordt's Danelle Boone got the Defenders within 16 (49-33) with 12:01 to go but Morningside quickly pushed the lead back to 25 points with a 9-0 run capped by a Brittany Alfredson jumper at 7:39. Dordt responded with a 12-2 run to cut the advantage down to 15 on a Kara Van Dyke free throw with 4:45 to play and that would be as close as the Defenders could get over the final 5 minutes before dropping the GPAC tilt 66-46.
"We controlled the pace fairly well in the first half," said Dordt Head Coach Craig Stiemsma. We got good looks from three point range with some quality ball reversal but you can't win basketball games when you turn the ball over more than 30 times and our turnovers led to some easy baskets for them especially in the second half."
Dordt finished the night with 32 turnovers while Morningside only coughed the ball up 12 times on the evening. The Defenders won the rebounding battle, grabbing 41 boards to 34 for the Mustangs. Dordt College shot 34% (17-50) from the floor and were 9-22 (41%) from beyond the arc. Dordt shot only 5 free throws on the night, making 3 for 60%. Morningside finished the night shooting 42.9% from the floor on 27 of 63, including 5-22 from 3 point range for 22.7% and were 7 of 13 (53.8%) from the charity stripe.
Dordt College was led in scoring by Danelle Boone who had 15 points on 5 of 11 from three point range while Brianna Spronk had 10 points and a game high 7 rebounds. Kara Van Dyke finished the night with 5 points, 5 rebounds and 2 blocks while Jessica Jelsema had 4 assists.
