November 30, 2011

(Sioux Center, Iowa) Dakota Wesleyan raced out to a 9-2 lead over the Dordt College women's basketball team this evening and never trailed in securing their first win of the GPAC season with the 63-56 win.

The visiting Tigers scored the first 5 points of the contest to take a 5-0 until a layup by Dordt's Kayla Gesink 4 minutes in the game got the Defenders on the board. A DWU free-throw followed by an Elizabeth Lamb 3 pointer gave the Tigers a 7 point lead at 9-2 but Dordt rallied to outscore the Tigers 9-2 over the next 4 minutes to tie it a 11-11 on a pair of Jamie Kok free throws at 10:48. Neither team was able to find the bucket over the next 3 minutes until an Amanda Hart 3 pointer broke the tie, giving them a 14-11 lead and another 3 ball from Hart at the 3:07 mark gave the Tigers their largest lead of the game at 9 (28-19. The Defenders scored the final 4 points of the half, capped by an Elish Maresh layup and Dakota Wesleyan took a 5 point cushion into the half leading 28-23.

The Tigers enjoyed two 7 point leads early in the second half but the Defenders were able to rally again to cut it to 1 (32-31) with 16:54 to play. Dordt trailed by a single point again at 36-35 but the Tigers pushed their lead to 6 (41-35) on a Kim Johnson 3 pointer and found themselves up by 9 (46-37)for the second time on the night with 11:29 to play.

Dordt then went on a run, capped by a Brianna Spronk jumper at 5:42, to outscore DWU 13-4 over the next six minutes tying the game at 50-50 and the teams were knotted again at 52-52. An 11-2 run by Dakota Wesleyan secured the win for the Tigers as they found themselves up by 9(63-54)with only 16 seconds to go as the visitors posted their first conference win of the year.

Dordt was led by Brianna Spronks's 15 points and Kara Van Dyke and Elise Maresh added 12 and 10 respectively. Kayla Broekhuis and Spronk led the Defenders in rebounds with 4 apiece and Danelle Boone had 3 steals.

Kim Johnson had 15 points for the Tigers with Brittany Hills contributing 14 and Amanda Hart 13 while Brittany Pritchard also had 10 points and a game high 7 rebounds.

Dakota Wesleyan had a substantial edge in rebounding, pulling down 36 boards to just 27 for the Defender women. The Tigers had 24 turnovers on the night while Dordt lost the ball 22 times. Free throw shooting also played a major role in the game's outcome as Dakota Wesleyan was 21-24 (87.5%) from the stripe while Dordt shot 9 of 15 for 60%.

"We had some good momentum at points in the game, rallying twice from 9 point deficits to tie it but we just couldn't get over the hump," remarked Dordt Head Coach Craig Stiemsma. "We felt like if we could get over that hump and take a 4 point lead we would be alright. They really slowed us down and gave us less shot clock to work with. We didn't have a single player with more than 4 rebounds and we need to get better in that area, especially on the offensive glass."
